Sample Normset

This NormSet is provided to illustrate a format in which normative priorities can be encoded. It is offered as an illustrative rather than an empirical example. Ideally, the PubWan knowledge base will contain a large number of normsets, representing the subjective priorities and norms of a large number of people. These, of course would normally be stored in a way that is not traceable to the authors. This is to address legitimate concerns for the privacy of individuals.

In general, normspecs can represent any economic good, or bundle of goods (see http://geocities.com/n8chz/pvo.htm). Note that this sample normset lists a job (in the employment sense) as a "good." Since labor is sold rather than purchased by laborers, treating jobs as "goods" is somewhat unorthodox. Nevertheless, MaxhiSchema is about negotiating tradeoffs between normative preferences. These preferences may or may not have to do with cash flow. Even if you're fortunate enough to have a job that generates cash flow in your direction, there is a good chance that you are "paying for" that job in currencies other than cash; such as waivers of rights, de facto indentures, submission to informational advantage, etc.

The items listed here represent my idea of a "minimalist" (see CashFlowMinimalism) market basket of consumable items, again with the assumption that in some sense a job is a consumable item. After all, in these conservative times PR copy never misses an opportunity to substitute "job provider" for "employer." Even authors putatively representing the working class are in on the "paradigm shift," as evidenced by all the "let's take a positive attitude to job hunting" literature that speaks in terms of "firing one's current boss."

Note that in this file a normspec is represented by an HTML table object. I think an SQL table would be more flexible in the long run. Right now, however, I only have sneakernet access (see ServerSideNetizen) so HTML is most expedient now. My plans for the near future include creating protocols for merging tabular normspecs, across "product category," and also across "contributor." I hope to come up with a simple method that destroys information that would identify contributors, while keeping contributions "intact."

Also, it must be re-iterated that normspecs (and normsets) are entirely subjective. This sample normset is a sample, not a suggestion. A normset representing the exact opposite preferences and/or priorities would be an equally valid pubwan contribution, in keeping with the NeutralityPrinciple.

Sample NormSpec's in this NormSet:

job
housing
grocery
wardrobe
risk management

Sheet 1: job

factor derivation unit ("SI," when applicable) MaxhiSchema assignment [comment(s)]
commute-distance (distance workplace homeplace) m minhi Saving energy laudable as SelfImposedNorm, no?
alternative-commute-friendly (minimum (distance workplace (common-carrier-stop index))) m minhi (same normative goal)
bachelors-degree-required
(boolean) maxlo AOTBE*, college-level may be a plus, or so we assume for this sample case.
advanced-degree-required
(boolean) minhi Again we assume; this time that required means required.
drivers-license-required
(boolean) minhi Because AOTBE I'd rather be associated with an outfit that doesn't hold carlessness against people, as this unethical (IMNSHO) HR practice makes a de-facto necessity of a de-jure and de-facto extravagance.
is-union-shop
(boolean) maxhi Solidarity forever, folkx!
job-description-includes-research
(boolean) maxlo Max because I'd be honored, lo because I'm humble. (See 'bachelors-degree-required, etc.; above)
research-includes-classified false for non-research jobs. (boolean) minhi Because my own subjective norms include a bias against the public sector.
research-includes-proprietary " (boolean) minlo Because I'm also biased against the bu$ine$$ sector. But lo priority because 9/11 et sequelæ have re-taught me the value of the private sector per se.
pay-rate
$ sec-1 maxlo Maxlo seems a suitable compromise between the need (do to pre-post-scarcity lifespan) for $elfishne$$ (i.e. "virtue"); and realism regarding résumé and other liabilities.

Sheet 2: housing

factor derivation unit ("SI," when applicable) MaxhiSchema assignment [comment(s)]

energy-leakage (surface-integral (/ r-factor) d area) W minhi

Sheet 3: grocery

factor derivation unit ("SI," when applicable) MaxhiSchema assignment [comment(s)]
under-budget (max (- budget (sum (price index)) 0) $ maxlo
over-budget (max (- (sum (price index)) budget) 0) $ minhi Staying under budget is a "preference;" not going over budget is a "need."
total-protein

total-sugar
kg minhi
total-fat
kg minhi
total-dietary-fiber
kg maxhi
total-inorganic
$ minlo Low priority because I'm broke. Minimized not so much because I buy the anti-inorganic line, but because I'd rather patronize the "alternative" food industry than the "mainstream" one. :)
total-gmo
$ minlo The ideological rather than nutritional basis for the preference is also why these criteria are weighted by price rather than mass.

Sheet 4: wardrobe

factor derivation unit ("SI," when applicable) MaxhiSchema assignment [comment(s)]
under-budget (max (- budget (sum (price index)) 0) $ maxlo
over-budget (max (- (sum (price index)) budget) 0) $ minhi
percent-union-label
(dimensionless...$/$) maxhi Purely normative criterion
number-of-suits
(dimensionless number) maxhi Higher priority than casual, because the HR Establishment reserves the right to grade people on silly stuff like this.

Sheet 5: risk management

factor derivation unit ("SI," when applicable) MaxhiSchema assignment [comment(s)]
