( A )    Jesus' stripes, not meant for
           physical healing

This study concerns Christs' atonement for our sins and the mindset which believes that that atonement made provision for physical healing.  Also, related to this issue is the belief that the scriptural truth which states, " by His stripes we are healed ", is defined as meaning that the physical stripes which Jesus Christ endured and received when He was whipped by the Romans on the day of His crucifixion was the means by which physical healing was provided by Christ.  However, as this study will show from scripture itself, the stripes which Christ bore on His back as He suffered and atoned for the sins of all mankind on the cross was not for the purpose of physical healing, but rather for healing from our spiritual faults.  Spiritual faults such as backsliding, sin, iniquity and transgressing Gods' spiritual teaching and commands for our lives.  Let us begin with a passage in the book of Jeremiah;

22.  Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the Lord our God.  -  Jeremiah 3:22

The next two verses show the context of backslidings.  They are in the context of the sinful nature of man;

6.  Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, and a wolf of the evenings shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased.  -  Jer. 5:6

7.  O Lord, though our iniquities testify against us, do thou it for thy name's sake: for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against thee.  -  Jer. 14:7

The following verses are in regard to the salvation of man from sin.  Nothing is written in regard to physical healing;

5.  But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
6.  All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.  -  Isaiah 53:5-6

24.  Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
25.  For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
-  1 Peter 2:24-25

The stripes which Jesus bore on His body were to heal our backslidings.  Jesus' stripes were not for physical healing.  The physical stripes of Jesus' body were part of what He suffered as the sacrificial Lamb of God for sinful mankind.  Jesus' stripes heals mankind from the backsliden condition due to sins, iniquities and transgressions; not from physical diseases, sicknesses or illnesses.
