'Cradle of the Navy'

This web site was designed upon the Naval Training Center San Diego commemorative history book "Cradle of the Navy", published by the Naval Training Center San Diego Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department in 1997.A postcard of recruit brigade review, circa 1960s. Recruit graduation ceremonies, open to the public, were held weekly.

At the time, only 500 copies were made and sold to the public. There are no more copies available, as far as I know. This website is in a constant stage of development as I find the time to scan photos and transcribe information from the book, so please check back often.

I was stationed at NTC from 1993 through the disestablishment ceremony and base closure in 1997. As the last base journalist and public affairs officer, I worked hard on writing and designing the history book for the base. I read dozens of newspaper articles from The Hoist base newspaper, poured over hundreds of photographs and interviewed numerous former Sailors from NTC, to bring the book to light. Other sources used included historical data obtained from the NTC base library, the Navy Historical Center in Washington, D.C. and from the "Annontated Bibliography of the History of the United States Naval Training Center, San Diego, California" by Donald Raymond Craig (1968).

For the purpose of continuity, Naval Training Center is referred to as NTC throughout this site. The installation was a 'Naval Training Station' from 1923 to 1944 when a Navy Department directive changed the names of all Naval Training Stations to Naval Training Centers with each tenant command (RTC, SSC and ADCOM) under the cognizance of one Center Commander.

Every effort has been made to ensure information in the book, as well as this webpage, is as accurate as possible. If you see any mispellings, inaccurate information, dates wrong, or something is just out of place, please let me know and I'll correct the error promptly. Thank you.
