YOUNG & EMERGING
ARTISTS INITIATIVE
The Nymagee Outback Festival is
presented by a non-profit community based association called the Mallee Hen
Cooperation. The festival is an ideal focus for the group and community to
achieve objectives of:
* promoting art and culture * promoting tourism
* promoting community services. for the isolated Nymagee district and vast
outback region beyond.
Our 2000 festival included four 7 hour music sessions for 2 days
and 2 evenings. Continuous concert performances took place predominantly on the
'Advance Energy Main Stage' but also on the 'Bush Stage' and 'Arts
Stage', especially for workshops.
Our festival is particularly unique because the site is extremely isolated
from general civilisation as we know it. Although it is only on the outskirts of
the pretty Nymagee village, our village population is only 35, district
approx. 150 and closest services, other than hotel, small store, police and
primary school, 100km away.
In 1999, for our first festival, 600 people came to the village. With a great
deal of positive feedback and more extensive promotion, we hope over 2000 people
will travel to enjoy the festival, camp for the 2 nights and be
enlightened from being a part in our major cultural event.
To help develop the festival's identity, image and audience appreciation in
these early stages, progressive overall themes to promote at each festival are
chosen - Heritage, Australian Bush, Centenary of Federation, Outback, World Music...However, because of our rural/bush location, the festival
will most likely retain a strong representation of country, folk, bush,
bluegrass styles, as well as more contemporary genres.
In 2002 we secured funds to support the
'Bak OutBak' concerts and workshop.
The Dept. of Communication, Technology and the Arts granted funds to support
appearances by professional artists such as the renowned Bushwackers, Greg
Champion and the Rovers & Drovers Outback Show. As it was the Year Of The
Outback, the festival had a strong bush music representation incl. a bush dance
caller to enhance the 'outback' theme....however the festival also included all
styles of music....jazz, soul and rock.
