2. INFLUENCES IN MARTIAL ARTS (Cont.)

2.2. Ancient India

Kastriya, warrior class of ancient India

In the 5th centry BC, the warrior caste studied an Indian martial arts style called Karinapaito. This style of martial arts is similar to Judo, characterized by strikes, locks, and dodges. The warrior caste, known as Kastriya, were comparable to the samurais of Japan in their role in society. The first documented testimony of this fighting system appears in ancient texts written in a Buddhist language of Indian origin. That text is known as the The Sutra of Loto.

Bodhidharma is the third son of an Indian rajah, of the warrior class. Though born into the warrior class, Bodhiharma is ordained a monk by the 27th patriarch successor of Buddah, Prajnatara. Bodhidharma is the legendary figure known for crossing the Himalayan Mountains to go to Northern China around 520 AD. An impressive feat considering the landscape of the mountains.
