Map of Okinawa Okinawa lies between Japan and China, the largest island of a chain of islands known as the Ryu- Kyu Islands. The main island approximately 6 miles wide by 70 miles long. Okinawa became the property of China in the seventh century. The Ming Emperor in China would licence Okinawan kings and restrict their actual authority.

Okinawa was an impoverished country until Sho Shin reigns the country. During his 30 year reign, the economy improves and the central government stregthens. It was Sho Shin's reign that builds a palace in Shuri and moves the warlords close to his castle. He takes their swords and stores them in a warehouse creating a mostly weaponless society with exception of the police force and palace security.
