Donating to Kiwanis Camp "Head"
Quarters
|
The following photos were taken at the Northwest
Kiwanis Camp on Beausite Lake near Port Townsend, Washington. Just
click on the photo to see an enlarged picture. During 2 weeks of the
summer Kiwanis hosts 2 camps for challenged individuals who
otherwise have very few opportunities to go to a group camp. Each
week session gives campers a variety of activities including
fishing, swimming, horseback riding, crafts and firesides. One on
one counselors are provided who stay with their assigned camper on a
24 hour basis thus optimizing the camp experience both for camper
and counselor. The 1st picture shows the tents the campers and counselors sleep in
each night. As money becomes available future plans are for more
permanent housing such as cabins. The second
picture is of Beausite Lake taken from the main camp building. There
is a trail around the lake but actual access to the water is limited
due to the lack of a dock and the boggy nature of the shoreline.
Potential here is unlimited but since a number of the campers are
also physically challenged lots of planning and financial resources
will be required to optimize this portion of the camp. The
third picture is the main camp building. A former house it is a
multi-purpose facility. It houses the kitchen, bathrooms, showers,
craft room, meeting/entertainment room and the camp infirmary. It is
big enough that small groups can stay overnight in the building. The
fourth picture shows many of the multi-purpose picnic tables that
were built by clubs such as the Olympic Kiwanis. Not only do the
campers eat on the tables but many of them convert to benches with
backs on them that the campers can use for their nightly firesides
and other activities.
