| Dmitri Hvorostovsky was born 16 October 1962 in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, in a family of engineer Alexandre Hvorostovsky (b.02.06.1938) and a physician Ludmila Hvorostovskaya (b.10.01.1936). In childhood the boy was fond of drawing and sculpture, soccer and music. |
| After secondary school he enters Krasnoyarsk Pedagogical College and obtains a diploma of choirmaster. Then Hvorostovsky enters Krasnoyarsk Institute of Arts and studies singing there with professor Yekaterina Yoffel. At first his voice was defined as tenor, but then it turned out that he has a baritone. Nicolai Putilin was Hvorostovsky's classmate at that time. |

| Hvorostovsky's operatic debut took place at Krasnoyarsk Opera House. It was Monterone in Rigoletto. In 1985 he won in All-Russia Singers Competition and in 1986 he won Grand-Prix at Glinka Singers Competition in Baku. Other winners were Olga Borodina and Oleg Kulko. In 1988 he wins First Prize at Toulouse Singers Competition, and in 1989 - BBC Singer of the World Competition. |

| Dmitri Hvorostovsky has made his London recital debut in 1989. New York recital debut in 1990, Western operatic debut at the Nice Opera in the Queen of Spades (1989) and his Italian debut in La Fenice as Eugene Onegin, American operatic debut with Chicago Lyric Opera (1993) in La Traviata, Metropolitan Opera debut (1995). He appeared in I Puritani and in Onegin at Covent Garden, in I Pagliacci at La Scala and Liceo, in La Traviata at Berlin State Opera. In 1992 he was awarded "Golden Orfeo" prize for his recordings made with Phillips. At the same year Hvorostovsky was awarded State Premium of the Russian Federation. |

| Dmitri Hvorostovsky is known not only for his operatic roles but also for his recital repertoire which ranges from Tchaikovsky to Ravel, from Purcell to Shostakovich, from Borodin to Sviridov. He presented his recitals at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Avery Fischer Hall, Carnegie Hall, Moscow Conservatoire Great Hall, Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, Roy Thompson Hall and other venues. Hvorostovsky pays special attention t promotion of music by Russian composer Georgiy Sviridov. He has become the first performer of Sviridov's "Petersburg" song cycle. |
