In this frequently changing and updating pages, we wil let you know the subjects which are highly voted. But for the first time, we will choose the subject and that is 'Digital Maps.'

Digital maps are the datas of geography and man - made shapes on earth saved by different projcetion methods using vertical and horizontal scales.

Digital maps are like stacks of numbers when considered their structure.

Digital maps are used generally in applications where engineering calculations are made and miltary area successfully. But in order to clarify why Software programmers deal with that we have to mention other usage areas too. You guess that, is that right? :=)

Yes Simulation. Either military simulation or commercial purposes simulations are used effectively in softwares.

It is widely used in military areas regarding guidance of weapons, efficiency and testing envirenment. And either in the planning process of military operations or during the operations, when decision making process is in evaluation. In this type of very important stages very detailed maps are used. For example, 1m or 1 cm detailed maps.  But the other usage methods which are less important than those require less detailed maps like 100m or 250 m detailed maps.

Digital maps are widely used in commercial areas like pilot and driver training. Also in virtual testing of cars in automative and other important areas. But we think that it is not used as wide as it is needed to be in Turkey. 

For example the wide use of digital maps in trainin of drivers would decrease the number of drivers who both have driver license and cannot stop thir car near the gas pump in Gas Stations.

There are many types of digital maps according to their usage area. Because their details are changing due their usage areas their formats and types are various. But in general digital maps are divided into 2 groups;

     a. Digital elevation Data,

     b. Digital Feature Data.

2. What does Digital Elevation Data mean? 

Digital elevation Datas are the mathematical representation of earth geographic shapes. Those shapes are saved in different detail formats ranging from cm to km.

3. What Does Digital Feature Data mean? Digital Feature Datas are the mathematical representation of man-made and geographic features on earth like roads, rivers etc.

4. Are there any more formats other than these? Yes there are different formats other than those. Especially due to the developments in satellite and information technology, the media is getting bigger to store more information. Thus, the formats are changing very rapidly.

5. How can I own a digital maps? although there are different ways to have digital maps, it can be seriously dangerous when it is  passed to bad guys. For that reason, by changing to world countries theyhave different security categories. Each country have their own defense agencies and different commercial companies produce digital maps.

6. Can I fnd an example data? Yes you can. either on the internet or other sources you can have a digital map where they do not belong to any geography on earth.

In the next couple of days we will have more documentation here where we will have example formats, reading methods, and usage methods. But due to the needs of extra working days to explain clearly on a sample, we need a little time. Because we still work on our project too.:=).
