TECHNOLOGY/PRODUCT:

A tracked tractor for peatland - PEATTRAK

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE

  • The design and fabrication of MALTRAK, a 43.5 hp transporter complete with Power Take Off and three point linkage facility, were carried out in 1986 with the assistance of Howard Alatpertanian Sdn Bhd.
  • Field tests on MALTRAK in 1986-1987 showed that it is not very suitable for as a tractor for field operations that require high power or precision control. This is because it was designed as a transporter.
  • A tracked tractor is needed for efficient mechanised crop production on peat.

DESCRIPTION

    General description

  • PEATTRAK is a tracked tractor prototype designed and developed by MARDI for use on peat land.

    Technical Specifications

  • Engine : 56 hp
  • Dimension (L x W x H) : 280 x 184 x 210 cm
  • Weight : 1850 kg (unladen basic machine)
  • Transmission : hydrostatic
  • Minimum ground clearance : 40 cm
  • Track system : 45 cm wide rubber track belt that wraps round 3 pneumatic tyres of 69 cm diameter.

    Published papers

PERFORMANCE

  • The machine can be driven in the opposite direction with the operator sitting on the instrument dashboard so that the implement is in front of the operator.
  • It can carry up to 1000 kg load on established peat where the water table level is more than 30 cm below the soil surface.
  • It can travel up to 15 kph (unladen).
  • A workrate of 0.3-0.6 ha/h for rotary cultivation was recorded depending on the depth of cultivation and softness of the soil.
  • A workrate of 0.2-0.4 ha/h for rotary slashing of old pineapple plants and shrubs was recorded depending on the thickness of the vegetation.
  • It can cross field drains of up to 30 cm wide without the need for bridges.
  • On peat, it can provide a drawbar pull of up to 1000 kgf when empty and up to 2000 kgf when carrying a 1 tonne load.

TECHNOLOGY STATUS

  • PEATTRAK is suitable for mechanisation of various operations in crop production on peat soil, that is cleared of wood obstacles, such rotary tillage, rotary slashing, row seeding/sowing, bedforming, peaticides boom spraying and lime broadcasting.
  • It is useful to estates where the soil is peat or very soft or the terrain is undulating.
  • Commercial production of the tractor has not yet been exploited.

ECONOMIC FEASIBILITY

    Economic evaluation of PEATTRAK utilisation

  • Tillage cost of PEATTRAK
