Who Is Operation Ivy, Anyway?
Operation Ivy is one of the more memorable bands from the latter-1980s California Bay Area punk scene.  What separated these guys from the more generic bands was the fact that they blended the traditional punk sound with upbeat ska and reggae music.  Infused with these many genres of music, Operation Ivy was destined to remain a favorite even after their tragic breakup in 1989.  Between the years 1987 and 1989, they released one EP, one LP, and songs on two compilations.  Although they have only a few songs released, we can still enjoy the messages and melodies brought to us by the legendary Operation Ivy.
Why Are They So Great? (or, "I've heard better.")
I'm at a severe loss for words when I attempt to explain why I believe Operation Ivy was and is so great.  Maybe its the hundreds of thousands of fans, many who picked up one of Operation Ivy's records after they had disbanded and realized what a great sound it was that flowed out of their stereo.  Or maybe it's the band's politics, the lyrics, the way they designed the booklets for their releases.  Who knows.  They just plain rock, with a sound as raw and ripping as when they played their first live show in Dave Mello's garage in 1987.  They have accumulated quite a cult following since their inception in 1987, and the ranks keep growing and growing each subsequent year.
What Happened To Them After Operation Ivy?
The most elusive of the cast of characters is Jesse Michaels.  See the In The Media section for more information on Jesse's life for the past ten or so years.  Tim "Lint" Armstrong and Matt Freeman began the infamous punk/rockabilly band Rancid.  Dave Mello formed the insane punk band Schlong with his brother, former OPIV roadie Pat Mello.  I'm not sure as to whether Schlong is still together.  I know they recently played a show at Gilman Street.  Anyone with more info, please e-mail me.  I have also heard that Dave is also the part-owner of a bar in California.  For more info check out the members' individual bios in the Band Bios section.
