all of the days of Choni Hamagel, the tzadik, he was confused about the
following pasuk. םימלוחכ ונייה
ןויצ תביש תא 'ה בושב תולעמה ריש-that Hashem should return us to Zion and all of
the exile of Babel would be like a dream. He was bothered, how could it be
possible that the 70 years of the Babylonian exile was like a dream(how could
they spend their whole lives dreaming)? One day, Choni Hamagel was walking on
the road and saw a man planting a carob tree and he said to him how many years
until this tree bears fruit? and the man replied 70 years. Then Choni said is
it possible for you to live for 70 years (to see the fruit of the tree)? The
man replied when I was born I found a world filled with carobs because my
parents planted them for me, even though they would not benefit from it. Choni
Hamagel could not understand why people would work so hard, and not benefit
from their hard work. Why bother? Choni suddenly felt tired and sat down by a
tree hoping to take a nap. Little did he know it would last 70 years. One
hundred rocks surrounded him, and he was covered in them, while he slept.
Suddenly, he awoke in a daze wondering what had happened. He then saw a man
picking carobs from the very same tree that Choni had seen being planted. Choni
asked the man Are you the planter of this tree? The man replied: I am the
grandson of the man who planted this tree 70 years ago for my benefit. Choni
also saw his own donkey had given birth to another generation, showing that
Choni had been sleeping for 70 years. He went to his house wondering what had
happened to his son. When he arrived at the house he asked: Is the son of Choni
Hamagel still alive? The answer he received was that his son was no longer
living but his grandson was. Choni approached his grandson and told him what
had occurred. The people of the household did not believe such a story, so he
went to the Synagogue to try to convince them that he was in fact who he said
he was. As he entered the Synagogue he heard a Rabbi saying. We are at the same point in our
learning that we were before Choni Hamagels disappearance In order to prove
that Choni was who he claimed to be, he answered every question the Rabbi asked
him correctly. However, this did not convince the people that he was Choni
Hamagel and they did not pay him the proper respect that he deserved. Choni,
feeling very depressed, prayed to G-d, begging for his death to come. Before he
died he understood what the true meaning was of אתותימ וא אתורבח וא (Give me a
partner in learning or give me death).
