Note: Pokémon Water Blue was thought to be the English name of Pokémon Leaf Green because Pokémon Green was never released in English.

New Trainers

In Pokémon Fire Red and Water Blue, trainers will once again explore Kanto. As in Pokémon Crystal, Ruby, and Sapphire, the trainer can be either a boy or a girl.

The Oaks

Professor Oak is still the Pokémon Professor of Pallet Town who gives new trainers their pokémon. Fortunately, that aspect hasn't changed. It is a mystery what has changed, though (because something must've changed. The Lavander Town ghost tower was turned into a radio tower in only one year, for instance)

The new pokédex has been powered up. It will now not only inform  what that pokémon's habitat is, but also if the pokémon must be evolved or hatched to be captured.

Professor Oak's grandson will rival the new trainer. It is unknown whether this is Gary starting his adventure over by taking on a new rival, or if it's another one of Oak's grandchildren who is becoming a pokémon trainer.

New Items

The new help mode

The new trainers can now ask any questions they have to their "bright older brother" in the new help mode activated or deactivated with the R and L buttons on the Gameboy Advance.

The requested information then "comes up in black and white pictures with a small description on it to explain how."

The item that the trainers carry on the straps of their bags is a Battle Searcher. This device is obtained in Vermilion City and it lets its owner see which trainers can battle him/her again. It's usually used by standing near a group of people already battled and pressing the button. The trainers that can battle again will signal to the owner of the Battle Searcher that they are ready to battle immediately. It is highly useful when a trainer's Pokémon need training.

The Voice Checker to the left is a special item that records some of the things that some of the most important characters in Kanto say. It also stores what some of the road signs say as soon as the trainer reads them, of course.

Another POV

In the game, entering a new area will actually display a picture of it from the point of view of a trainer in that area.

A forest from the point of view of a trainer lost in it.

Islands

Maps of all Islands

In Pokémon Fire Red and Water Blue, several new islands to the South of Kanto are accessible by sailing where there will be many characters (among which Bill is prominent) and many pokémon to meet. Unknown character from Southern Islands

Mini-games

In the new islands it will be possible for trainers to play mini-games with their pokémon with other trainers through their gameboys without needing to connect them thanks to the wireless function.
