OHHHH - YOU MEAN PORNOGRAPHY

Playguy, September 2001 (correspondence to Jiffy Fulfillment Inc., P.O. Box 1102, Cranford, NJ, 07016-1102, USA; published by Playguy Publications, Ltd., 462 Broadway, 4th Floor, NY, NY, 10013, (212) 966-8400; Editor-in-Chief Gordon Wallace; $6.99 US on the newstand (I would guess from this magazine’s longevity that it can probably be found at all the best non-homophobic smut-peddlers in your town))

This magazine’s managing editor, one Mr. Jim Eigo, made it known he was looking for ‘zines to review in his publication. Since I am politically pro-porn (though I don’t have much use for it myself), I figured I should put my money where my mouth was (I then wiped off the currency and used it for photocopying and postage) and send him a copy of my former rag, Noise Queen.

To my delight, they DID profile it (a flattering critique) and sent me a copy of their filth as well.

It is full of youngish fellows’ pictures, with stories related to same. There is a letters to the editor section and an advice column. There actually WAS one model who was cute, I’ll concede, if only because he had some fur (a fellow profiled in the piece Cherry Bomb (gotta love the Runaways reference!!) – some dykes I showed Playguy to thought he was sweet-looking and less funny than the rest of the magazine’s depictions – I’m not sure WHAT that could mean…). There are film reviews (both mainstream and adult), and one of the articles was illustrated with cartoons (nice touch). The links section at the back gave me some neat sites to add to my page.

It is a well-photographed and, er, passionate body of work. To those so inclined, I’m sure it could be found in your town or tracked down via information to be found on the websites.

Bound and Gagged #82, May-June 2001 (published by Outbound Press, P.O. Box 2048, NY, NY, 10116-2048, ed. Sean Van Sant; $7.95 US)

This issue generated controversy, resulting in its being delayed, because of a video its overseers created, Boynapped, which was critiqued by Chris Crain, editor of several gay publications, due to recent kidnappings-murders by ‘gay sex maniacs’. The video is about a fantasy scenario, even within the story framework, not a ‘real’ kidnapping. Bob Wingate, B&G’s publisher, had to respond to the depiction of the work. But it’s out now…

Though it’s taken me years to ‘fess up, I am fascinated by S/M and bondage scenarios. Thus, this magazine gives me ideas and, if I may be frank, a hard-on. The advice column of Patrick Califia-Rice and, in this issue, a piece by David Halperin on Foucault and what he might have had to say about bondage, are thought-provoking and wise.
There are stories and pictorials of great thought and detail, and I was enamoured of the Punk-magazine-like story excerpt from the video (speech bubbles – campy elements – sound effects – even the use of the phrase Holy Titclamps!! (I wonder if LarryBob of www.holytitclamps.com has seen this!?)). All this, plus extensive personals and ads for various products and videos, make it a very, er, stimulating read to get tied up in.
