LEADERSHIP

Venture Scout Standard

a)     Leadership Training

Successfully completed a Venture Leadership Course approved by The Singapore Scouts Association.

b)     Practicing Leadership

Hold an appointment or a role of responsibility successfully for not less than 4 months in the Unit or one approved by the VSL beforehand.

The venture should discuss with the VSL ( or designate ) & record his role. Terms of duties , responsibilities , targets , achievements, etc and  later evaluate with the VSL ( or designate ).

Eg. President of a Dance Society , Student Councilor , Captain of Debate Team , Secretary of School Orchestra, Stage Director of a College Drama , I/C Unit’s Community Service Project , Vice Captain of School Hockey Team, Chairman of Unit’s Gangshow, Peer Support Leader , Games coordinator for your Constituency, etc .

a)     Hold the First Class Scout Badge

Or

Complete the Pre-requisite Core Requirements:

( Refer NPC Progress Badge Scheme – Land Scout )

b)     Night Exploration

Plan , organize and execute a Night Exploration not less than 20 km

 

Holder of the Chief Commissioner’s Award will be exempted from Overnight Exploration test.

ACTIVITY

Venture Scout Standard

a)     Pursuit

Show evidence to the satisfaction of your VSL that you are actively participating in

An Indoor Activity

AND

An Outdoor Activity

 

The list of activities , interest or sports is not restrictive. However, whenever in doubt, the HQ should be consulted before commencement of these activities.

 

(Outdoor): Astronomy , Gardening, Pioneering , Flying, Abseiling , Diving, Swimming, Jogging, Lifesaving, Canoeing, Sailing, Soccer, Basketball, etc.

 

(Indoor): Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Music, Drama, Dancing, Computer Programming, Bowling, Martial Arts, Photography, etc .

b)     Fitness

Have attained the National Physical Fitness Award (NAPFA) – Silver

Or

National Physical Fitness Award (NAPFA) – Bronze and one of these options*:

Or

Any two of these options*

 

Options* :

-         Swim at least 400m continuously in Front Crawl and/or Breast Stroke

-         Run and/or Jog at least 5 km continuously

-         Canoe at least 5 km in 1 hour

-         Walk at least 6km in 1 hour

RESPONSIBILITY

Venture Scout Standard

a)     Training ( Any one of the following )

¨      Singapore Red Cross Society – Standard First Aid

¨      St John Ambulance Brigade –  Adult First Aid

¨      First Aid qualification ( Adult Level ) accredited by National First Aid Council , Singapore.

¨      Singapore Life Saving Society – Bronze Medallion

Or

Similar courses approved by HQ will be added on the list at a later date.( Eg. Civil Defence ). If in doubt , consult HQ.

 

SERVICE

Venture Scout Standard

a)     Service Instructor

Perform not less than 8 hours of consistent service as a skill instructor in a Cadet Scout/ Scout Unit over a period of not less than 4 sessions on a regular & consistent basis . ( Eg. Weekly , Biweekly ,etc ).

Examples of Scouting skills include First Aid, Cooking , Knotting, Pioneering, Foot drill ,etc.

* Participation in a Project used for fulfillment of Citizenship part of the Venture Scout Training Scheme 2000 CANNOT be used for this section and vice versa.

CITIZENSHIP (complete 1 of the following clauses)

a)     Defence

Attended the Pre-National Service Programme jointly organized by The Singapore Scouts Association ( TSSA )and The Singapore Armed Forces for Total Defence / National Education purpose or attained the Total Defence ( Gold ) Proficiency Badge.

Or

Attended similar programme jointly organized by TSSA with The Singapore Civil Defence Force , The Singapore Police Force and other Uniformed Services for Total Defence / National Education purpose or attained the Crime Prevention Proficiency Badge for Venture Scout.

 

b)     Caring Society

Participate in a Project or programme which has one of the following objective:

¨      Caring for the Elderly

Eg. Care for Elderly Programme ,Family Day, Outing for Nursing Homes , Old & Destitute food distribution, Senior Citizens Clinic or Home visits ,etc.

¨      Caring for the Environment

Eg. Reforestation, Coral Reef repair ,Beach clean up , Recycling ,etc .

 

¨      Caring for the Animals

Eg. Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals / Humane Society / animal-care project or events , anti-animal abuse campaign , AVA Volunteer Cat Sterilization programme,etc.

¨      Caring for the Under-Privileged

Eg. Humanitarian Aid Project, Fund Raising Effort for Disaster relief, Overseas Humanitarian Mission, Operation Raleigh, SIF Overseas Mission, etc.

 

c)     Community Living

Make an arranged visit to one Community Club , Organization or Governmental Department or Statutory Board, with a group of Scouts / Ventures and then make a report to the Unit on how it is organized and its functions in the society.

Eg. Neighbourhood Police Centres , Public Utilities Board , Town Councils, Community Development Council , Housing Development Board , Sewage Department, Incinerator or Power Plant, Water Works Department, Area Office, Grass Root Club, Community Clubs, National Trade Union Congress, Singapore Parliament House, Singapore Immigration & Registration , National Volunteer Centre, Singapore Council of Social Service, Juvenile Court , Small Claim Tribunal, National Parks Board ,etc.

 

 

d)     Cultural Involvement

Conduct a cultural exchange between at least 2 different cultures in Singapore or with visiting groups to Singapore from overseas.

Or

Participate in an Overseas Scout Jamboree or Culture Exchange Programme*

 

Programme* include: Food , Dance, Songs, Costumes, Art, Customs & Social practices, Audio Visual display, Exhibition, Souvenirs , Presentations on Culture/Economy/Educational Systems ,etc.

 

e)     Heritage

Complete the National Heritage Trail for Venture Scouts ( TSSA )

 

f)       Citizenship

      Participate in activities  that VSL/ ExCo deems promote Citizenship or Community Living may be considered ( does not belongs to clauses (a) to (e) ) . Consult HQ for approval on such activities to be used to fulfill the requirements of this section.

 

Personal Development

a)     Career Awareness

Complete any one of the following to the satisfaction of your VSL:

Attend a talk / seminar / exhibition on Career Guidance & Development. Discuss with your VSL and make a short presentation to your Unit on how you would choose a career.

Eg. Career events organized by MOE Career Guidance Unit / Ministry of Manpower / Singapore Professional Foundation / SAF or Home Team Career Centre / Public Service Commission , Careers Exhibition , Scholarship Seminar ,  etc .

Or

Make an arranged visit to a chosen industry, corporation , statutory board or a *medium size company. During the visit , make a report on the different kinds of jobs/careers available, remuneration, staff incentives, job security, training opportunities and other details which will help you in understanding the choosing of a career. Discuss with your VSL or make a presentation to your Unit.

 

*Medium sized company in this context refers to one with at least 25 staff and 5 different levels of job description.

 

Or

Do the following:

        Prepare a Curriculum Vitae of yourself

        Write a Letter seeking employment in response to a suitable job advertisement

        Prepare a Checklist on how to present yourself for a job interview

 

Your school counsellor or career guidance teacher or Unit Leader who has HRM experience may be able to help you.

 

b)     Self Improvement

Successfully completed a course/seminar on any one of the following topics pertaining to Self Improvement. The following is a sample list, but it is by no means exhaustive. You may also seek your VSL for their advice on a relevant subject on Self Improvement.

 

E.g. Public Speaking , Social Etiquette , Effective Study Technique , Time Management, Effective Communications, Emotional Intelligence, Accelerated Learning , Mind Mapping , Effective Writing Skills, Creative Writing , Creative Thinking , Boy-Girl Relationship , Team Dynamics/ Confidence Training ( OBS 5-day or longer course ), Brainstorming ,etc.

 

c)     Spiritual Development

Understand the Religious Policy of The Singapore Scout Association ( P.O.R. 1/8 – Religious Policy ) and complete any one of the following to the satisfaction of your VSL :

 

Be able to discuss with your VSL and/or conduct an activity or lesson on moral values and the implication of The Scout Promise & Law in our daily lives. Also suggest practical ways to apply The Scout Promise & Law in our daily living.

Or

Participate regularly in your personal religious activities and be able to discuss & explain the beliefs and practices of your religion , and its applications to The Scout Promise & Law. You should also establish contact with your religious organization ( E.g. Church, Temple , Mosque, etc ) and present a study of the structure, role and objective of the organization.

Or

Make a study of at least 3 religious groups in our community, explaining the similarities and differences  in their beliefs , practices and activities. You could visit these places of worship and meet with someone who can explain to you.

 

SELF RELIANCE

Venture Scout Standard

a)     Survival Skills

Pack , Make & know the usage of a Survival Kit

Demonstrate Knowledge of rescue signs & signals

Demonstrate methods of collecting water and food

Build a naturally improvised shelter for 2 persons
