Other Historical monuments in the out skirts of Kandy

       The vicinity of Kandy too abounds with monuments of various historical interest, mostly religions buildings constructed during 14th to 18th century.

Galmaduwa Vihara


Galmaduwa Viharaya - a stone built Buddhist shrine of the Kandyan period depicting a unique architectural

  A stone pavilion as its name suggests but is popularly known as gedige. The lower storey of Galmaduwa is built of stone and the upper storeys of brick and stone masonry in seven diminishing steps, representing a vimana. This building has a strong resemblance of Hindu architecture.

Ambekke devale


Decorated Timber Panel - Ambekke Devale

A special shrine dedicated to God Skanda built in the 14th centure. This building consists of a garba, inner sanctum, a sanctum; the digge ( or dancing hall ) and a Hewisi Mandapaya ( or drumming hall ). The Hewisi Mandapaya is a special attraction with its intricately carved pillars. Nothing has been spared of wood without elaborate carvings; beams, columns, brackets, doorways, doors and windows. This is one of the finest pieces of traditional architecture.

       It also has a Buddhist shrine with a seated Buddha Image and a miniature stupa. The two chamber granary is also a special feature in the complex.

Vegiriya devale


Historic stucco Icon of God Natha found inside the cave shrine of  Vegiriya Devale.

This devale is dedicated to God Natha and the small Buddha Vihara had been built in the 14th Century. the architecture has been developed, in association with a natural rock cave. Within the cave are two beautiful seated stucco images of God Natha and his consort Tara. the elaborately carved wooden doorway at the entrance of the shrine is an excellent piece of art.

Degaldoru Vihara


Cave Temple shrine at Degaldoruwa

Acave temple built at the foot of a big mass of rock about 5 metres high. On the summit of rock is the Bo-tree shrine and the Stupa. In the inner chamber of the Vihara Cave is a large recumbent image of the Buddha. The walls and the rock ceiling are decorated with exquisitely drawn paintings of kandyan period ( 18th century ). It is a good example of the refined paintings of this period.

Gadaladeniya Vihara

A special building of South Indian origin with a Devale attached to it, similar in character to the Natha Devale and the Gedige of Adahana Maluwa. The main shrine room has a seated and the remains of some paintings of the Gampola period.

       Architecturally this is considered as one of the most important buildings of the 14th century. The stone built image house, representing South Indian temple architecture has a large seated Buddha statue in the main axis of the building and a statue of God Upulwan ( Vishnu ) along the secondary axis perpendicular to the main axis. The roofed stupa the Vijayothpaya is on a high stone platform with four image houses facing the four sides mounted with small stupas.

Lanka thilaka vihara


14th century brick built image-house of Lankathilaka Vihara built on the summit of the rock with excellent sculpture and painting of different periods.

Lankathilaka image house is considered to be one of the best examples of traditional Sinhalese temple architecture in existence. Built on a rock with a beautiful setting, the temple is reached by a long series of rock cut steps. An arched passage of the image house leads through a Mandapa (hall) into the inner sanctum which is richly decorated with paintings. A colossal seated image of the Buddha in the inner sanctum is placed under a beautiful Makara Torana. This monument has an interesting multiple roof structure covered with flat clay tiles.  [ Page up ]
