From Jiang Nan, Yang Guo travels further along the countryside, asking people along the way if they have seen Xiao Long Nuu (Dragon Girl). As they all shake their heads, he begins to lose hope of ever finding her again.

A harsh winter finds him making his way up Hua Shan where a traveler advises him of the mountain's formidable dangers but it is as if
Yang Guo does not hear him.

     Futher on,
Yang Guo notices someone covertly following him. The person is a stubby old man dressed in ragged clothing and carrying a knapsack and a stick.

     The intruder thinks that
Yang Guo is one of the Ugly Five of Tibet's Border but upon closer inspection, he sees that the young man looks harmless and decides to become friendly with him.

Yang Guo's soaring skills greatly impresses him for he has never seen such a technique as his before. He invites
Yang Guo to help himself with the food that he brought and even lets him in on how to cook his favorite delicacy -- boiled centipedes.

After they have both eaten their fill, the old man commissions
Yang Guo to act as sentry for three straight days while he sleeps. The grateful young man readily agrees and stays close to his new friend.

The old man sprawls across the snow-covered ground and sleeps.
(NOTE: The old man avoids freezing to death by keeping control of his chi even while he sleeps. This technique is much like the technique that Yang Guo learned on the Ice Stone Bed.)

Some time passes by and a group of evil men arrive.
Yang Guo suppose them to be the Ugly Five that his companion had mentioned earlier. When the men come upon the old man's body, they think that he is dead and start to exclaim his name. It is then that Yang Guo finds out that his companion is actually the famous Hong Qi Gong, the former leader of Beggar Sect Kung Fu.

He remembers that there are only four great kung fu masters left. Northern Beggar
Hong Qi Gong, West Poison Ou Yang Feng , East Heretic Huang Yao Shi, and the South Emperor Yi Deng.
