On the surface the M-14 may seem like a failure, an idea reinforced by the fact that it has one of shortest frontline careers of any rifle used by the USA military. Look deeper and one learns that the M-14 is a very potent firearm that is, in some ways, more functional than the AR-15. The larger 7.62mm x 51 NATO cartridge used by the M-14 is more versatile for larger game hunting, pentetrates obstacles better and is lethal as far out as 600 yards, making it a candidate for sniper duty as well. It must be said though, that the 7.62 NATO round is more volatile in urban areas due to its power. The M-14 recoils much harder than the AR-15, making swift follow up shots harder,  and is a cumbersome  rifle which hinders mobility. The action is known to be reliable, but can be considered arhaic because it evolved from the WW II M1 Garand. The Civilian version of the M-14 is also commonly known as the M1A
