The King and I

The King and I When I first heard that The King & I was going to be remade as an animated movie it seemed to me to be a natural idea. The movie itself was set in an exotic location with wonderful, upbeat music and cute kids. How could it go wrong? Well, now we've got the answer to that question. The entire movie is somehow badly out of sync as though it knew where it wanted to go, but didn't know how to get there. Songs and scenes from the original movie were not only wedged into the storyline; they were shoved, smashed and hammered there. At one point, while her ship is being attacked by a fire breathing dragon, Anna, her son and the crew of the ship begin singing I Whistle A Happy Tune which was so out of place given the circumstances that it wasn't even funny in a stupid, what were they thinking way, but only served to make me squirm at the idiocy of it. The animation itself is pretty much second rate and very little of the movie is truly funny. Master Little, a villian who constantly finds himself losing teeth during the course of the movie is not only not funny; he's an insulting racial stereotype with no redeeming value. Basically this was a second rate Disney wannabe that wasted a lot of great potential.
