Westchester
County Airport was constructed in 1942 as an Army Air Force air base for
the protection of New York City and, in 1947, it was converted to civil
aviation use and given its present name, though the New York Air National
Guard still maintained a unit there until 1981. The airport is the home
of many private and corporate aircraft, and it is serviced by several major
airlines, including Air Canada, AirTran Airways, American Airlines, Continental
Airlines, JetBlue, Northwest Airlines, United, and US Airways. Independence
Airlines also operated out of the airport, before it folded, and its final
departing flight was #1777, which was flown from the Westchester County
Airport, on January 5, 2006, at 7:34 p.m., to Washington Dulles International
Airport (IAD). Northwest Airlines later bought Independence's operating
certificate, on March 10, 2006, and renamed the airline Compass Airlines,
though it does not fly out of Westchester County Airport.
