Yuuki Miaka was your average Japanese junior high student, studying for the high school entrance exams feverisly to ensure her future - well, more like sleeping through classes and dreaming of devoring every morsel of food in the country ^.^'. Her life is suddenly spun for a loop after taking a trip to the national library with her friend, Hongo Yui. Miaka finds herself summoned into an ancient chinese book by the image of a bird of shining flame-red feathers. Both she and Yui are suddenly thrown into the world of the book "Universe of the Four Gods". Although Yui makes it home after a short 5 minute stay in the books realm, Miaka is forced to remain inside it's pages alone until she bumps in to the handsome yet money hungry Tamahome. She later also meets up with the also handsome Hotohori, emperor of the country she 'fell into', Konan. He asks her to become the "Suzaku no Miko" (Priestess of Suzaku as known in the dubby) and find the seven celestrial seishi or warriors who are destined to serve her. A tough job but hey, beats the exams.

The romance between Miaka and Tamahome is obvious at first glance, although it takes some time for them to be really truely happy. Miaka becomes very close to all of her warriors, who are pictured above. Clockwise starting from the top: Hotohori, Nuriko, Tasuki, Mitsukake with kitty companion Tama, Chiriko, Chichiri, and Tamahome. Her friend Yui ends up being resummoned into the book as the Seiryu no Miko for the neighboring country of Kutou. Yui is almost raped when she is summoned and is convinced Miaka is to blame by Nakago, general for Kutou and also one of Yui's Seiryu warriors. A wonderful friendship is burned away into a bitter hatred as Yui constantly tries to win Tamahome's affections. All of her Seiryu warriors are pretty much hateable as much as she is. Her warriors are as follows: Nakago, Amiboshi, Suboshi, Soi, Ashitare, Tomo, and Miboshi.
Fushigi Yuugi is defiantly among the top of all greatest and most popular animes. It's creator, Yuu Watase, is well recognised and known for her wonderful and breathtaking character designs and stories. All of Fushigi Yuugi, including the OAVs, have been released by Pioneer. The dubbing is very well done, although the subtitled is a bit better of course. Midorikawa Hikaru, who does the voice for Tamahome, is one of the most popular voice actors in Japan.
