- I was annoyed by the vague references to dates. It seems that the book is much too general for the historian and too specific for the casual reader. even if no explanation was added, footnotes would have helped.
I also think the photos could have more informative captions.
I was also fascinated by the endpapers. These are maps of JG-52's operational area, the Crimea and Southern germany, with what looks like airfields identified with dates and connected by arrows which look like chronological movements. If this is a map drawn by Rall, it should be of historical interest. No explaination is given in the book.
Although written by a "professional" author, she appartently has little knowledge of WWII and less of the Luftwafffe. All in all, a BIG diappointment. Dick Powers

- Emil Clade's theme throughout the book is that luck was with him throughout his career in the Luftwaffe in that he was lucky to survive numerous incident including accident, being shot down, and encounters with the SS. Clade flew with JG 27 in Poland, on the Western Front in 1940, the English Channel, the Mediterranean, and the Reichsverteidigung. He scored 27 victories, all against the Western Allies, but there is not even a list of his kills in the book, which is 124 pages which include 36 pages of photos, I was disappointed with the lack of description of the many combats he had been involved in. The book is easy reading for someone knowledgeable in German and it consists of a lot of anecdotes without there being a continuity to his career. I was hoping for more stories of combat but I was disappointed. Klaus Schiffler

- Germany's General of Fighters recounts the rise and fall of the Luftwaffe. Despite its autobiographical flavour, Galland seems to fade into the background of the wider context of Germany's airwar. Similar in scope and approach to Johnson's Wing Leader, The First and the Last holds more value as a reference book than as a particularly fun read. Dave "Prophet" Williams

- Here we have the nineteenth in the long-running "Luftwaffe at War" series from Stackpole and Greenhill. While most of the other books in the series deal with an individual aircraft type on a specific front during the war, and feature photos of the aircraft in question, this volume looks at the pilots themselves rather than their machines. Like the others, however, this book follows the format of about four pages of introductory text, a gallery of color photos, and then pages of black and white snapshots with captions. Again, a credible, workmanlike effort, but one that does not compare well to the more inspired work from Classic. Bill Stone

detailed analysis, charts, etc. Some of the pilots included: Oesau, Wick, Bär, Dickfeld, Gollob, Muncheberg, Crinius, Trautloft, Mölders, of course, Lutzow and others. If you are interested in a close-up, detailed analysis of many of the leading fighter personalities, this would be very useful. Jim Haycraft
- Spick, Mike. Luftwaffe Bomber Aces: Men, Machines, Methods; Mechanicsburg, PA: Stackpole Books, 2001 239 p. ISBN 1-85367-444-3
- While there is a section—in fact, two chapters—devoted to biographical sketches of leading bomber pilots, mostly Spick reviews the course of bomber and attack aircraft operations on all fronts, including Poland, France in 1940, the Battle of Britain, the Russian front, and North Africa. Spick proves very adept at tying together technical details, operational nuances, and first hand accounts with thoughtful analysis, and the whole is nicely enhanced by charts and diagrams such as "Fighter evasion with a Ju 88," assorted bomber formations, profile of a dive bombing approach, "A Mistel attack," and more. The sketches cover each pilot's youth, their training, military service with an emphasis on night operations, and their postwar lives. Lots of air-to-air action as well as more reflective moments about the comradely bonds among pilots (including enemy pilots). Most of this material comes directly from interviews and correspondence with the flyers. Bob Ruman

- This is a strange and somewhat disappointing book. Organization and formatting are confusing. Much of the data should have been put into appendices or footnotes.
While I was not so naïve as to expect a silver bullet to answer all the questions about production, there are many huge gaps of a nature which could have been addressed-if not filled-by existing literature. For example, there is a listing of early Bf 109 production block by manufacturer and it goes into some F and G series. Why stop, apparently arbitrarily, with the number 19 999? Other sources such as Prien and Rodeike's Messerschmitt Bf 109F, G, and K Series could have filled some gaps. The whole table could have then been footnoted to explain sources, their suspected reliability, etc.
The bibliography and citation of sources for tables is wholly inadequate and in many cases does not exist. The subject is such that these must be cited to gain credibility. Too much erroneous information has been published over the years. By citing sources, the author can make his case based on documentation. When citations are not present more questions are merely raised.
Research by some very respected people such as Michael Payne and Dr. James H. Kitchens III based on data plates, A.I.2(g) reports, etc., markedly contradicts Vadja/Dancey 's Bf 109E Werknummer list, causing me to wonder how reliable their other lists and tabular material are. John Beaman
