Much of the work deals with the Armistice Armée de l'Air organisation and operations, covering the period 6/24/1940 - 11/28/1942 and describing French and Italian dealings through the Armistice Commissions. Especially interesting is the chapter on the requisition and use of French matériels after the occupation of Vichy France.  Jean-Guy Rathé

Govi, Sergio. Il Caccia Reggiane Re 2001; Milano: Giorgio Apostolo Editore, 1982 220 pp.
This volume depicts in a very rich and detailed way the design story, the production events, and technical information concerning each Re 2001 built (including R.A. Serial) and detailed operational information about units that operated the aircraft. Last but not least quite detailed info concerning colours and markings (including those of Co-Belligerent Air Force).  Massimo Cappone
Govi, Sergio. Il Caccia Reggiane Re 2000 e la storia delle "Reggiane"; Milano: Giorgio Apostolo Editore, 1983 254 pp.
The first part of the book depicts in a very rich and detailed way the design story, the production events, technical information, and notes concerning each RE 2000 (including R.A., Swedish and Hungarian serials) with detailed information about operational units that operated the aircraft. He also details the events linked to the licence-production in Hungary by MAVAG.
The second half of the book reports the history of the company from 1901 till the end of war, including production, financial and employement statistics and. Also in the second part of the book is a discussion of the projects of ing. Giovanni Pegna (Studio Brevetti Gruppo Caproni). This section is followed by the historical and technical description of three unlucky Reggiane prototypes: the P 32 Bis and the two Ca 405 C. Last but not least quite detailed info concerning colours and markings (including those of the Swedish and Hungarian Air Forces).  Massimo Cappone
Govi, Sergio. Dal Re 2002 al Re 2005; Milano: Giorgio Apostolo Editore, 1984 227 pp.
The volumes depict in a very rich and detailed way the design story, the production events, and technical details concerning each Re 2002, Re 2003 and Re 2005 been built as well as detailed information about units that operated the aircraft. Last but not quite last is detailed information concerning colours and markings (including those of I.C.A.F., A.N.R. and Luftwaffe)  Massimo Cappone
Govi, Sergio. I Reggiane dalla A alla Z; Milano: Giorgio Apostolo Editore, 1985 227 pp.
The first part of the volume, organized as a dictionary, gives the technical description (extracted from the original Workshop Manuals and Spare Parts Catalogues) of the single part composing Re 2000, Re 2001, RE 2002, RE 2003 and RE 2005 (including versions). The second part of the book deals with prototypes and other projects as Re 2004, Re 2006, Ca 8000 not forgetting some notes concerning the never-built Re 2007. Also in the second part there are historical and technical information concerning the licence-production of S. 79, followed by details concerning each S. 79 built at Reggiane (including the R.A. serial). After that chapter a detailed description of the engine production follows and, by the way, I'm quite sure that only in this book can detailed information about Re 103 engine prototype can be found. After that a list of people that worked at Reggiane in the period 1938-1945 (from the top management to the humble technician) and the final result is a quite interesting organization chart. At the very end of the book each single frame of the propaganda documentary "Primo volo" (First Fight) about a RE 2001 "prototype" (btw the aircraft of the movie is already surviving after having been, with his pilot, the main character of an unbelieveble story). At the very end a rich collection of Reggiane posters of the period.  Massimo Cappone

An large amount of excellent information packaged around numerous photos. More complete coverage than volume I due to the fewer number of units involved. A number of snapshot OBs included. Jason Long

Very useful histories of the Italian gruppi, marred only by the lack of volume 2 to complete the series and cover the independent squadriglie. One could wish that it was more complete on certain units, but the author probably used all available information. Expanded into the following volume. Jason Long
Dunning, Chris. Courage Alone: The Italian Air Force 1940-1943; Aldershot: Hikoki Publications, 1998 272 p. ISBN

The biography of Tullio De Prato, the Chief Test Pilot of Reggiane. It's important because it's a good picture of the aeronautical history of Italy from the '20s to the end of the war and immediately post-war. De Prato joined the Accademia Aeronautica (the R.A.'s West Point) and he reached the rank of General in spite of being a maverick.  Massimo Cappone

Aireview's German Military Aircraft in the Second World War; Tokyo: Kantosha, 1959 2 volumes, 2nd edition of the English text
One volume contains the Japanese text and illustrations and the other, the English text. This works covers only the specifications, but does that rather well considering its age. The best feature is the coverage of the various design projects, both jet and piston-engined, which, overall, I've yet to see bettered in one volume.  Jason Long

Very good book on the main contender to the Bf-109 as primary Luftwaffe fighter. Good coverage of its use in Spanish, Romanian, and Hungarian service. Many photos. One of the better "In Action" books from Squadron.  Al Magnus

The photos are mostly very sharp and clear and include many I have never seen before. There is a real treat in the nine additional color photos, eight of which show World War II machines along with one restored in England. The photos and color artwork alone are a good value for the money and I can recommend it to those who would like to have a little more information on this three-engined transport.  Barry Rosch

An essential reference to the operational use of the Me 262 as seen through records of both sides and interviews with surviving pilots who both flew the jet and flew against it. Analyzes every single reported encounter that the Allies had with the 262! Best read in conjunction with Boehm's history of JG 7, the major user of the fighter model of the 262, as it updates that work somewhat.   Jason Long

It is a supplement to the earlier Japo book on the Bf-109K. It is in English, with Czech supplement and is IMHO worth the money.
Extensive analysis of general camo and specfic detailed analysis on many individual aircraft. New photos of some a/c seen before, excellent color profiles, some revisions of color info in their earlier book, some color pics. Photo reproduction is of high quality.  Pete Chalmers

A must have quick reference to unit heraldry. Not perfect or without faults, but still a great guide with excellent information and some nice b/w photos as well. At its low price you can't go wrong. Especially nice were some clear references to units such as Esquadron Azul and some Croat units serving with the Luftwaffe.  Ruy Horta

This book is well researched and based on original documents and eye-witnesses. It gives all available information on the conception, design, development, and testing of this aircraft. Also the preparations for its operational debut are described. The text is very readable and informative and the book is filled with excellent photos, pictures and drawings. If you are interested in the history of this remarkable ground-breaking aircraft this publication is a must. Even if you are not able to read German it still will be a valuable source considering the many photos, drawings and pictures. Highly recommended!  Huib Ottens

The book is basically divided into two main parts, the first consisting of histories (chronik) of the Bf 110 (including the FW 57 and the Hs 124), the Ar 240 and the Me 210/410. This section is a detailed chronologically arranged list of events important to each type. It makes for fascinating reading and is illustrated with a large number of photographs.
The most valuable and interesting section is the other one however, dealing with a technical review of all variants and subvariants built of each type (i.e. the FW 57, the Hs 124, Bf 110, Me 210, Me 410 and Ar 240 and some projected Zerstörers, the Li P 10 and Me 329). Here we finally have a detailed account showing us the differences between the Bf 110 variants, and boy, let me tell you, most of the older literature is now obsolete! I was very pleased to finally have a reliable reference for the difference between the Bf 110F and G. There is also a lot of interesting information on the very early Bf 110C series. The same goes for the sections on the other types, a lot of useful information that no doubt will be useful when identifying subtypes from photographs. This section of the book is very well illustrated, with photographs of the relevant subtypes which are actually placed exactly where they should, next to the text describing the subtype and not 3-4 pages later! This section also contains a lot of works drawings, schematics and hand book photographs and some excellent drawings of the interior of early Bf 110Cs which will be extremely useful to modelers.
There are several interesting drawings of projected Me 410 versions in the book, including one with longer wings and Me 410C/D engine cowlings and a projected night-fighter variant with 30 mm Schräge-Musik, a new He 219-style canopy and radar.
There is not much unit history or information on the operational use of the various types, but that is not the scope of the book as I see it.
The book ends with a list of Rüstätze for the Me 410 with drawings showing placement, etc.; a production list of the Bf 110 and Me 210/410 showing how many were built of all variants, when they were built and by which factory as well as their W.Nr.(sadly not St.Kz); a list of prototypes and test airframes; a detailed account of engines used and finally a substantial reference list. Vol. 1, Part 2 of Luftwaffe Colours. Mombeek and the gang at Classic have gone several steps beyond merely assembling and captioning period photos. Sure, crisp photographic images abound -- of men and aircraft -- but they've been skillfully woven into an informative book rather than a simple photo album. Even so, Mombeek relies less on a single narrative thread than does Bernad. Instead, a series of chronological chunks are assembled with background text, photos, sidebars (including commentary from pilots who were there), emblems, and color plates of the Luftwaffe fighters. The result is educational and visually stunning. Definitely recommended.  Bill Stone

560 illustrations. Initally I was dismayed because over 50 of the illustrations are of fine scale models. Very nicely done models, but models. I wrote David Mhyra, the author, and he replied, saying that there are so few actual photos of the C version of this bird, that he felt the only way to illustrate how the aircraft looked in three dimensions was to use scale models.
The remainder of the illustrations are incredible. Sources are original Arado drawings (from preliminary hand sketches, to plan and side views, to handbook technical illustrations, retraced Arado drawings and new scale drawings. Each drawing is clearly labeled as to its origin. The text is abbreviated, but does list all the Ar 234 test aircraft and each planned C sub-type is summarized.
This book is a remarkable compilation of what looks like every surviving Arado 234C drawing and photo, with well written, concise captions.  Dick Powers

This is a 95% reprint of his Focke Wulf 190 At War. If you have that, don't buy this one. The additions are three unit strength returns which, while useful, can be found in other places. There some small additional appendices, but they're not of much use. Lest anyone accuse me of being a book bigot because I have earlier books that many younger enthusiasts may not have, let me say, if you do not have the earlier book, by all means buy this one, it is a good and useful book. But if you have the earlier one, think very carefully about how you spend your money.  John Beaman

Translation of Messerschmitt Me 109: Das meitstegbaute Jagdflugzeug der Welt, Vol. 2. This volume seems to offer little or nothing new (except some tabular production information) and is grotesquely inadequate to cover its subject in addition to being studded with egregious errors.  Rabe Anton

Translation of Messerschmitt Me 109: Das meitstegbaute Jagdflugzeug der Welt, Vol. 1. I believe it to be far and away the best technical work ever done on the early Bf 109 series and quite possibly, with a few exceptions, the best that can be done. The authors have, it appears to me, bored deeply into primary material that has not been explored before and have unmasked a good many misconceptions as well as provided significant new information.  Rabe Anton
