THE TWO INDISPENSABLE TITLES:

The Trouble With Harry Hay
A Biography by Stuart Timmons
1990, Alyson Publications
Out of print, but very easy to find copies
in used bookstores. This is a classic,
and a damned good read to boot. Gives a clear sense
of the beginnings of Gay consciousness, radical politics
and the beginnings of Radical Faerie.

Radically Gay
Gay Liberation In The Words Of Its Founder

Edited by Will Roscoe
1996, Beacon Press
Harry's essays and thoughts on Gay Being & Spirit
This is a truly remarkable piece of theory and Gay edification.

OTHER HARRY HAY RESOURCES

Gay Spirit: Myth And Meaning
by Mark Thompson
1987, St. Martin's Press
Sadly, this is also out of print. But like the aforementioned Timmons work, also available in good used bookstores. Harry has a piece in it titled, "A Separate People Whose Time Has Come" and Thompson also includes an excellent interview with Harry titled, "Harry Hay: A Voice from the Past, A Vision for the Future."

Gay Soul
Finding The Heart of Gay Spirit and Nature

Interviews And Photographs by Mark Thompson
1994, Harper San Francisco
This collection of interviews with what Thompson calls, "sixteen writers, healers, teachers and visionaries" is quite wonderful. I believe its still in print. It includes an interview with Harry titled "Harry Hay: Reinventing Ourselves"

A Radical Faery's Seedbed
1997, Vortex Media/Nomenus (San Francisco)
available through Wolf Creek Sanctuary (Oregon)
This limited edition (500 copies) publication brought together collected essays of Bradley Rose, one of the early Radical Faerie brotherstarters. Included is "A Blessing from Wovoka" by Will Roscoe and Harry Hay (also found in the Roscoe edited "Radically Gay"-above-, and John Burnside's excellent essay, "Who Are The Gay People? and other Essays"

Edward Carpenter
Selected Writings, Volume 1: Sex

1984, GMP (Gay Men's Press-United Kingdom)
Carpenter's life and writing were a strong influence on Harry's theorizing and work. My recommendation is that if you come across any of Carpenter's work, you snatch it up as fast you can. Its brilliance and poetic power was not only indispensable to Faerie/Gay/Queer consciousness, but to the development of Feminist theory...yes, Madison, I said Feminist theory. If only every Gay person alive read his work .
