THE SFX VIPER BY APOGEE

An image of the sfx model viper with some of the more noticeable differences marked out. Ever seen a CGI viper that looks anything like this one? No, me neither.

AN UNUSUAL VIPER

spacer.gif (836 bytes)This is a rather odd photograph reprinted here for current lack of a better place to put it. This is a scan from the back of Space Trek Special 1978 and is part of an advertisement for the Monogram Battlestar Galactica model kits. But neither is this picture the Monogram viper or the sfx viper. Looking it over, it’s an amalgam of the two. It has the simplified nose section of the Monogram kit, but lacks the lip on the rear of the engine intakes, as does the sfx model, and although it’s not as visible here as I would like, does have the same afterburner cans as the sfx model, with more ribs and details. The laser cannon are also mounted differently from the Monogram kit and look a little more like the cannons on the sfx viper. So the question is, what is this thing? My best guess is that it’s an early pattern for the Monogram viper!
