Snake Den Road is located in the Wyanokie Highlands, surrounded by the woods and rugged terrain of Norvin Green State Forest.
From the mid-18th to 19th century Iron mining was a major activity in the Snake Den Road area. The two mines adjacent
to Snake Den Road are the Laurel mine and the Blue mine. The Blue mine ore deposit was first discovered and mined by
Peter Hasenclever around 1765. This mine was worked until 1905. Throughout the area can be found ore dumps, mine workings,
and the remains of mining camps.
In the 1920's Camp Midvale was created at the end of Snake Den Road for working people seeking refuge, recreation,
community, and nature by a group of outdoor enthusiasts called Nature Friends.
Over the years, the camp evolved into the Weis Ecology Center which became one of the New Jersey Audubon Society's Centers
and continues to offer a variety of environmental education programs and activities.
