Graciano Lopez Jeana
Graciano Lopez Jeana was born on December 29, 1856 in Jaro, Iloilo. After his primary education in the province of Iloilo he went to Madrid, Spain, where he stayed for almost fifteen years. It is in Madrid where he received news about the tyrannical rule of the Spaniards in the Philippines. Angered, he founded a fourth nightly newspaper the La Solidaridad and became its first editor. With the help of other Filipinos living in Madrid he collected and wrote many articles about the abuses of the Spaniards.
La Solidaridad became the official organ of the Filipinos in Madrid in seeking reforms for the Philippines. It was a success. Emboldened by its success and the response of the Filipinos in Spain, he returned to the Philippines to gather more help and material for his fight for reforms. Then he returned to Spain to continue his work.
He continuously worked on La Solidaridad until his own resources stared to ebbed. Though he wanted to return to the Philippines, he was already a poor man. He died in Barcelona, Spain on January 20, 1896.
