"The Last Movie Hero"� Under this title you can find in Russian
video-market the one of the most successful, it seems, films of Arnold Shvarzennegger,
Hollywood super-star, the greatest master of genre "blood-and-guts thriller" - "The Last
Action Hero".
"The Last Movie Hero" is a thriller, but - a
fantastic one. The film consists of events, which happen in front of and behind the screen in a
film theatre - in the fictional world of cinema and the American reality, which reminds us some
features of the Russian living conditions in the late 1990's. This is not a new pitch, but very
effective. Confrontation, comparison of the two worlds - generative and generated is not always
be in favour of the first one, and the constant presence of "a kind viewer in the 9th row", a
boy, teen-ager, a causer of marvellous changes from one world to another, strengthen the effect
of psychoactivity for viewers, elaborates the scopes of their associations.
This movie is equipped with everything necessary to make the
viewers, including admirers and adversaries of the genre, to watch it with pleasure: stunts,
special effects, pursuits, shooting, fireworks, even self-irony about the simplicity of "coup
de theatre" for the movies of that type, which is comprehensible even to a baby �
Inimitable Arnie does the typical and well-known to everyone role
of superman Jack Slater admirably. His hero is almost Robin Hood of contemporary America,
fighter-single, who is waited to pass through improbable adventures in front of and behind the
screen. And� Arnie didn't forget to appear as himself, advertising his own "child" - the
restaurant "Planet Hollywood". In a word - everything is all right for his success and
business�
You will ask me, what does Timothy do here? What he has there?
Cameo or a bit part? I even don't know, what to say� Incident�, no, it was only a twink, one
moment, but so brief, that I can honestly say, I would never see it without the article under
the same title, like this, on "Timothy Dalton Official Home Page". It seems, this incident was
not specially directed by somebody. Brief, exact and remorseless, like shot, and able to act on
the emotions of those, who could see and understand, - like a lash or cold-water douche, - this
incident can stop further perception of the movie.
This brief incident is like a living illustration to such
Hollywood films, like, for example, "The Player". Do you remember, how "warmly" it's said
there about British actors. If you've forgotten, I'll remind you: during discussion of the
script for new movie a hero of Tim Robins asked the question: "Who will play leading role
there?". And the answer sounds approximately thus: "Nobody. No stars, no popular faces - only
unknown theatrical actors� or Britons�".
This our brief incident happens during the first night of the
spin-off about Jack Slater, when being in the middle of a common boom, a great shouts of the
fan's crowd and cameras' flashes of everpresent reporters, Jean-Cloude Van Dumm is interviewed
by one of them, but behind his back, like in the real life, always in a shadow, the siluett
and for a moment - the face of an actor appears, who, from the point of view of a spectator,
can do everything or almost everything in his profession! I say "can", meaning not "he will do
it, if he'll be asked", but "he has already done it", already could, and in the genre of
"action" - too!
You will not find his name in the cast of this film. You will
find almost nothing about him in the serious editions in the Russian libraries and, as our
friends from his motherland , in UK - too. He has never got any prestige award neither in
cinema, nor in theatre or TV and, if to believe IMDB, he didn't even be nominated, though his
partners have got them often, like the constant attention of the press, TV and producers.
But you know and love his best pictures, because he could create
there unrepeatable, bright, livivng, different and human characters. His creative diapason -
from musical to Shakesperian tragedy, from melodrama to thriller, from horror to fiction and
fairy tale� Even in his back-burner works you will find a lot of interesting for you things:
the plot, ensemble of actors, musical theme and, certainly, it will be interesting for you to
know, what new has cooked this chameleon, this man with a thousand faces, whose actor's
mastership was a subject of admiration of Peter O'Tool, Vanessa Redgrave, Sean Connery�
"The Last Movie Hero"� Who is he? May be it's not a hero of
Schwarcennegger, as supposed by movie's authors. May be it's that actor, who is the last in
the journalist's "List of Stars", and, like it take place often in our life, the first for
many and many spectators?
I'd like to believe, that in front of Timothy Dalton - not only
the love and gratefulness of viewers, but the new interesting roles and long ago well-worn
honours!
