This TV-film, based on the novel "The Reef",
written by Edith Wharton, was issued not so long ago on video in USA,
though it was aired on TV somewhere in Europe shortly before this event.
Timothy Dalton in the part of George Darrow,
the British gentleman at the beginning of the twentieth century, is busy only
with the decision of his own affaire d'amour with the nice in all respects
partners Sela Ward and Alicia Witt. All the events take place on the
background of the comfortable European interiors and parks. Passions run
high only in the title, but the film itself tells a story of development the
relations in the love triangle, where the top belongs to a man, who has no
character at all.
As to the Russian viewers, this film can
remind them of the old Soviet movie "The Autumn Marathon" or foreighn one
"Agatha", where Timothy has too little screen time to show the deep emotions
of his hero. But here Mr. Dalton has a lot of the time, however the material
itself, alas, allowes him to give only the "one-dimensional" portrait, though,
I think, the film will find it's grateful auditory, especially among those,
who is keen upon TV-serials or soap operas.
