According to posts by Sam Kantimathi, the location of the 2010 and 2011
National Scrabble Championships was revealed at the Town Hall meeting of
this year's NSC to be Dallas, TX.
The following day, John Fultz posted his notes from the Town Hall
meeting, including this explanation from Chris Cree when asked about the
location:
"The simple answer is Dallas, TX. I definitely did not want to
pick Dallas.
I contacted people in places such as Kansas City, Louisville, some place
in Virginia. Jane recommended using a search company, which I contacted. Literally, every day for 60 days, I got emails and faxes with 10-30
proposals for locations everywhere. Important for me was the cost of the facility,
hotels, availability of emergency facilities, food/beverage requirements,
square feet. For example, got 12 hotels in Vegas, 8 hotels in Reno. These
proposals required commitments for food/beverage, $25,000 for the space, and so on.
I refused to make commitments for food/beverage. A hotel in Dallas, the Intercontinental, wanted a commitment for the number of hotel rooms. I
made a commitment of 200 rooms in Dayton. The Intercontinental offered the
meeting space for free if the room commitment is met. I didn't want to do this
because it would look like "home cookin'". The search company guy as an
incentive offered 10% of his fee to NASPA to take this place. I had dinner with the
hotel representative to sign the contract, and he pulled out two contracts...one
for 2010 and one for 2011. The deal was too good to pass up.
I heard from John Williams that they're back in Orlando looking for a site for School
Scrabble, and the Orlando people are saying that Las Vegas are kicking their butts
because they've dropped prices. I'm wondering where were those lower prices in
February? Now that I've heard about Vegas dropping their prices, we're interested in talking to them. Concerning requests about moving the NSC
around the country, that seems like it would be a good part of the selection
process, but we really want to look for a deal. One major issue has been the
hospital situation. New Orleans wanted us to come back, but we didn't want to go
because of the hospital situation there. The other thing to remember is that when
you make the deal, it depends upon how hungry the people you're dealing with
are. 18 months ago, Dayton was a wonderful deal. It doesn't look quite as good
today because of the down economy."
The full version of Fultz's notes can be found here.

After negotiations between RIck Wong/Jeff Widergren and NASPA, the 2009
West Coast Championship has now been sanctioned by NASPA and will be
rated.
Jeff Widergren's announcement on cgp of the tournament's sanctioning
can be found here.
|
05/26/09
On May 26, Rick Wong announced that the 2009 West Coast Championship
will not be sanctioned by the new NASPA organization. The tournament will
therefore not be officially rated, and no rating fees will be paid to
NASPA.
The following is an excerpt from a post on cgp by Wong:
"So, after many difficult discussions, and repeated efforts to
work out various compromises with Chris [Cree], Jeff [Widergren] and I
have decided that we are not willing to accept the current terms of
running a NASPA-sanctioned event ... We believe that many others agree
with us that the players of the West Coast are underrepresented in the
decision-making processes of the new organization and that NASPA's
business plan or proposed budget should be made available before it starts
to collect money from the players. After nearly two years, Jeff and I
cannot continue to pretend to have faith that Chris Cree is working in the
best interests of the Reno tournament."
"It is unfortunate that I have to announce at this time that the 2009
Reno West Coast Championship will not be a NASPA-sanctioned event."
"... I do still have hope that we will soon figure out some
compromises that will make us one big happy family in the future, but I
feel that we have to take this step to let Chris Cree and NASPA know that
we do not feel that our grievances and issues are insignificant and should
just be ignored."
The complete text can be found here.
John Chew's response can be found here.
