A Little About Us.
The
Westover Area Volunteer Fire Company was organized in the Summer of
1980. The first truck was a 1959 Ford which was purchased in August
1980. For the first several years the Fire Company used a garage on
Railroad St., as its fire station. In 1983, 5 acres of land along West
Bridge was donated to the Fire Company, by C & K Coal Co. and soon after
a 2 bay Firehall was constructed. In 1989 the Fire Company added a
116x38 addition which is used as a social hall. With much hard work
and fundraising, the fire company was able to purchase its first new
fire engine, a 1998 Freightliner manufacture by 4 Guys in Meyersdale,
PA,. In October 2006 the Fire Company received an Assistance to
Firefighters Grant (AFG) from the Dept of Homeland Security in the
amount of $194,504.00 and was able to use the money towards the purchase
a 2007 Freightliner Engine-Tanker also manufactured by 4 Guys. Then
November 2007 another AFG was received in the amount of $47,452.00,
this money was used to purchase 17 sets of turn out gear and 4 Self
Contained Breathing Apparatuses and 4 spare bottles. In the Spring on
2008 with a $9500 state grant the Fire Company added a Cascade System to
the fire hall, which is used to fill our air bottles. With the help of
the PA Bureau of Forestry the Fire Co was able to get a 1986 Chevy Truck
through the Federal Excess Property Program, which is now being used as
a brush truck. September 2008 was another good month for the Fire
Company when it landed its third AFG for $34,675.00, this was used to
purchase Hydraulic Rescue Tools (a.k.a. Jaws of Life), Thermal Imaging
Camera, and an automated external defibrillator (A.E.D.). Currently the
Fire Company has 20 active firefighters, 6 Junior Firefighters and
several non firefighters that help out with fundraising.
