Balean Norma
29.10.1907 - 30.11.1989 je bila dolga leta ena najpopularnejših igralk v Bergnu. Gledalci so občudovali njen talent, privlačnost in igralske sposobnosti.
Norma Balean was one of Bergen's most popular actresses for many years. Her audiences, both young and old, were fascinated by her charisma, charm and acting skills. Before, during and after World War II, she took part in operettas, comedies and musicals at Den Nasjonale Scene in Bergen. These productions were often quite dependent on Norma Balean's participation. At the age of 21, Norma was contracted by the theatre, which was looking for a young, dark-haired girl of her age with a pretty face and a good singing voice. A combination of these qualities gave Norma Balean a part in Emmerich Kalman's operetta, Die Zirkusprinzessin. This led from success to success, including roles in theatre's serious repertoire: Hamlet, Peer Gynt, and others. The many comedies and musicals in which Norma Balean starred attracted audiences who are not registered as regular theatre visitors.

Balin Mireille 20.7.1909 - 9.11.1968
Z Jeanom
Gabinom je igrala v dveh najuspešnejših francoskih filmih 30.tih let:
Pepe le Moko in Gueule d`amour. V času druge svetovne vojne je
igrala v nekaj filmih in postala idol pariške visoke družbe. Zaljubila se je
v oficirja nemške vojske Birla Desboka. Ob koncu vojne sta poskušala pred
zavezniki pobegniti v Italijo, vendar so ju ujeli. Desboka so verjetno
ustrelili, njo pa pretepli, posili in zaprli. Pod jamščino so jo leta 1945
izpustili in ji prepovedali igrati. Po prepovedi je leta 1948 igrala v
svojem zadnjem filmu Dernière chevauchée, La.
Zaradi slabega zdravja je namreč prenehala nastopati. Umrla je zlomljena in
pozabljena.
Mireille Balin was one the most glamorous and best loved actresses of pre-war French cinema. She appeared in two of the best remembered French films of the 1930s: Pépé le Moko (1937) and Gueule d'amour (1937), both opposite Jean Gabin. After the German occupation of France she starred in several films and became the idol of the Paris High Society where she met the love of her life, Birl Desbok, an officer in the Wehrmacht. In the summer of 1944, as Paris was about to be liberated, she and Desbok fled Paris and tried to reach the Italian border but they were arrested by the FFI. Separated from Desbok, who was probably executed (she never knew what really happened to him), she was beaten and raped before being taken to prison. She was released on bail on 1945. She was forbidden to work for a year but once this restriction lifted, she went back to the studios to appear in what proved to be her last film Dernière chevauchée, La (1948), her frail constitution prevented her from appearing in any other films. She died forgotten and broke.

She was born Vilma Lonchit, near Budapest. She was discovered by Sam Goldwyn who was taken her exquisite beaty and brought her to Hollywood in 1925 to star opposite Rudolph Valentino in The Eagle, and subsequently, The son of the Sheik (1926). Bankly is best known for the work she did opposite handsome leading man Ronald Colman. They appeared in five films together and their chemistry was magical. Unfortunately Bankey`s career died with the advent of sound because audiences found it difficult to understand her heavily accented English. She retired from films in the late 1920s after marrying movie star Rod la Rocque; they stayed together until he died in 1969. In 1932 she made one last film, Der Rebekk. Bankley died in 1991, but news of her passing was not announced until 1992 for it was embittered Banky`s dying request that her death not be formally announced.

Beauvoir Simone de 9.1.1908 - 14.4.1986 je francoska pisateljica in feministka, učenka in življenjska sopotnica Jeana Paula Sartra, z njim je urejala časopis Les Temps Moderne. Leta 1929 je končala študij filozofije na Sorboni. Do leta 1943 je poučevala. V prvem romanu Povabljenka je opisala zapleten odnos konkurenčnih zavesti dveh bitij. Njeno najpomembnejše delo s katerim je vzbudila mednarodno pozornost je Drugi spol
(1949). To je eno temeljnih del feminističnega gibanja v kasnejših letih. V
njihovo enakopravnost.
She was a French writer and feminist. A disciple and consort of Jean Paul Sartre, she played a leading part in the existentialist movement. After receiving a degree in philosophy from the Sorbonne in 1929, Beauvoir was a teacher before she turned to fiction with She Came to Stay (1943), a novel illustrating the existentialist idea of freedom through an autonomous act. She further elaborated on this philosophy in The Blood of Others (1945), All Men Are Mortal (1946), and The Mandarins (1954), a fictionalized account of Jean Paul Sartre and his existentialist circle, for which she won the Prix Goncourt. Her most important nonfictional work is The Second Sex (1949), a comprehensive study of the secondary role of women in society. The book is widely credited with inspiring the women's liberation movements - both in Europe and the United States - that began in the late 1960s. Beauvoir later published a distinguished series of autobiographical volumes - Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter (1958), The Prime of Life (1960), The Force of Circumstance (1963) - which describe her own life and that of her contemporaries from her early twenties on. She continued in a similar vein in A Very Easy Death (1964), about her mother's last days; The Coming of Age (1970), in which she comes to grips with approaching old age; and All Said and Done (1972). In their entirety, Simone de Beauvoir's works form an inestimable intellectual history of contemporary France.

She was the 12th child of 13 excluding the five that died in childbirth. Both her parents died in the same year when she was 19 years old. After their death, she recommitted herself to a resolution she made when she was 15 to live a holy and virtuous life… her desire was to serve her suffering neighbors. She received her medical degree at the age of 27 and began medical practice to care for her patients’ bodies as well as their souls. She wanted to help mothers and children in particular. She met Pietro Molla and married. While in the second month of a pregnancy, a tumor was discovered on her uterus. She had three choices: abortion, complete hysterectomy which would abort the child, or to have the tumor removed. She decided against the first two to save the life of her child even though she knew very well that the third was the most risky. She prayed that she would be spared the sacrifice of her life but she in fact died on April 28, 1962 from complications of the pregnancy. The daughter to whom she gave birth was present at her mother’s beatification on April 24, 1994.

Bergman was probably best known for her roles in Casablanca (1942); For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943); Gaslight (1944), for which she received her first Academy Award; The Bells of St. Mary's (1945); and two Alfred Hitchcock films, Spellbound (1945) and Notorious (1946). She returned to Europe after the scandalous publicity surrounding her affair with Italian director Roberto Rossellini (whom she later married and divorced) during the filming of Stromboli (1950). But she returned to Hollywood and triumphed in Anastasia (1956), for which she received another Oscar. She received a third for her role in Murder on the Orient Express (1974). She also starred in Ingmar Bergman's Autumn Sonata (1978). Her last role was in the television film A Woman Called Golda (1981).

Sarah Bernhardt was the stage name of the French actress Sarah Henriette Rosine, whom many consider one of the greatest performers of all time. She began her training at the age of 13 and in 1862 made her debut at the Comedie Francaise in Jean Racine's Iphigenie en Aulide. She first came to notice in 1869 at the Theatre de l'Odeon in Francois Coppee's Le Passant (The Passerby). She became a star as the queen in Victor Hugo's Ruy Blas, as Dona Sol in his Hernani, and as Phedre in Racine's classic drama. She made her London debut in 1879 in Phedre. The following year she made her triumphant New York debut in Adrienne Lecouvreur, and during the next four decades she toured the United States nine times. Bernhardt had an extraordinarily beautiful voice, perfect diction, and an astonishing emotional range as a performer. Her slim figure and dark eyes made her especially suited for roles requiring seductiveness. She also excelled in expressing pain, tearful rage, and the throes of death. She herself managed several Paris theaters after 1893 and in 1899 reopened the Theatre des Nations as the Theatre Sarah Bernhardt, where she starred both in revivals and in new works. She also painted, sculpted, and wrote poetry, a novel (The Idol of Paris, 1920), and plays, including L'Aveu (The Confession, 1898) and Un Coeur d'homme (A Man's Heart, 1909). She performed all over Europe, North and South America, Australia, and Egypt. Her personal life was unconventional, and she was expert at creating and maintaining a fascinating public image. For instance, she was reputed to sleep in a coffin she carried with her. Even after her right leg was amputated in 1915 as a result of a fall, she continued to act.

BLAND Lillian
1878 - 1971
je kot prva ženska zgradila letalo "Mayfly".
Lillian Bland was born in
Kent, and at the age of twenty-eight came to live at Tobercoran House, the
family home in Carnmoney, near Belfast. By this stage she had earned a
reputation as a press photographer and sports writer. Her aspirations were
fired by the achievements of the Wright brothers in the USA and she began to
construct a bi-plane glider, and was the first woman in the British Isles,
possibly in the world, to design, build and fly her own plane. She named the
plane 'Mayfly' with deliberate irony. The 'Mayfly' did fly, and she fitted
an engine by A. V. Roe & Co. This modified craft flew successfully in 1910.
It is said that her father's offer of a car diverted her attention to
running a motor agency, and she then married and left for Vancouver. At the
age of ninety-three the Belfast Telegraph quoted her as saying that the only
excitement left to her was gambling.
Francina "Fanny" Blankers-Koen, is a former Dutch track star who won four gold medals in the 1948 Olympic Games at age 30 after her career had seemingly been cut short by World War II. She began competing when she was 17, but after the Germans overran Holland her competition was restricted. Nevertheless, she became a world-class competitor in the 100-meter sprint, the 80-meter hurdles (tying world records in both events), the high jump, and the long jump. In the 1948 games, Blankers-Koen, then the mother of two, won the 100- and 200-meter sprints and the hurdles, and led her team to a 400-meter relay victory. Between 1938 and 1951 she set world records in seven individual events.

Out of Africa pripovedujejo o njenem življenju v Afriki. Po tem je izdala še dve zbirki zgodb: Zimske zgodbe in Poslednje zgodbe. Njena dela so mešanica romantike in realizma.
Isak Dinesen is the pseudonym of Baroness Karen Blixen-Finecke, a Danish author known for her short stories and accounts of experiences on a coffee plantation in British East Africa, now Kenya. She married Baron Bror Blixen-Finecke in 1914, was divorced in 1921, and managed the plantation alone until 1931. While in Kenya Dinesen wrote Seven Gothic Tales (1934), published in English under her maiden name of Dinesen and widely acclaimed by critics. She later translated the work into her native Danish. Out of Africa (1937) recounts Dinesen's years in Kenya and was written in both Danish and English. It was followed by two more collections, Winter's Tales (1942) and Last Tales (1957). Dinesen's short stories are works of art consciously written in the tradition of the 18th-century Gothic novel. They blend romance and realism, showing a subtlety of mood and an awareness of the psychology of the human spirit.
