1998 - Bike-Aid 3,600 Miles Across The U.S.A.

1999 - The Great Divide Mountain Bike Expedition

August 4, 1999 - Selkirk Campground - Hartsel

DISTANCE TRAVELED: 37.64 Miles
AVERAGE SPEED: 13.83 MPH

I woke up at 7:30 and got out of my tent at 8:00. I had a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast and by 9:00, I began to ride. We climbed back up the one-mile-long hill that we had come down the day before and then descended for 8 miles into Como. We had planned on eating breakfast there but the only restaurant was closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. So, since this did not work out, I went to the local store and bought an orange juice along with two huge muffins. I was filled for the time so we soon left and rode toward our destination with rain jackets on since it was fairly cool out. We rode along on good dirt roads at high speeds. (Picture134) Along the way, I found a Colorado License plate so I picked it up and shoved it under my bungee cords on my BOB. We rode on and arrived in town just as the rain started to come down. We went into the store where I bought a pint of ice cream and then went to the HOB Restaurant. When we finished eating, I set up my tent in the schoolyard and then went shopping with Marnie for dinner. We bought everything to make chilidogs and made dinner around 6:00. A lot of food was left over so we had tons of clean up. By 7:00, we were done and everyone went to the local bar. I put the license plate onto my BOB with zip ties so it would stay for the rest of the trip and after sitting around for a while, I went to bed with rain coming down hard on my tent at 9:15.
