Articles

Definite article
The definite article (equivalent to the English "the") precedes a noun with a predetermined meaning. In the singular, it must agree in number and gender with the noun it introduces. Plural forms of the article are identical for masculine and feminine. The French definite articles are:
Singular
  Plural
le garon
la fille
the boy
the girl
les garons
les filles
the boys
the girls

Note:Le and la become l' when they precede a noun that begins with a vowel or a silent h. The plural remains regular.

Singular                   Plural                                                    English
l'enfant                 les enfants                              the child                        the children
l'heure                  les heures                              the hour                         the hours

Indefinite article
The indefinite article is equivalent to the English a / an / one and precedes an unspecified noun. French uses:
Singular
Plural
un homme (masc.)  a man

une femme (fem.)   a woman

des hommes (masc.)             men

des femmes ( fem.)               women

Partitive article
The partitive article is placed before an uncountable noun to indicate a part or portion of it. In English, it is not necessary to use an article before nouns such as water, energy, or patience; however, French requires this. The partitive articles are:
du (de + le); (de l' before a vowel) masculine singular
de la; (de l' before a vowel) feminine singular
des (de +les) masculine and feminine plural

du sel             (some) salt
de la farine     (some) flour
