The Family of Dr. John MCCORMICK and
Anne REDMOND?
(9th. Generation)

302 John MCCORMICK, b. _____, Scotland, d. 1768, Jefferson Co., VA, m. (303) Anne REDMOND?. (There is no proof of this marriage; it was listed in DAR Patriotic Index 1966, p450). Dr. John MCCORMICK, who emigrated to VA from Ireland between the years of 1730 and 1740, was the founder of the family in America. In the Orange County records there is a deed under date of 21 May 1740 from Jost Hite to "John MCCORMICK of Orange Co." for 395 acres of land. Subsequently he took up other grants adjoining this property, which was located in that part of Orange County that eventually became Jefferson Co., WV. It was on this estate, near Summit Point, that in 1740, he built, "The White House", which is still standing. "Weehaw" and "Upton" were part of this property. The 'White House' became the property of John Locke of Jefferson Co., VA in the early 1800s, passed on to his daughter, Eleanor LOCKE MORROW, and on her death to her children by Joseph MORROW (1809-1882) (see 16), the compiler's great-great grandfather. Joseph bought the property from his children, most of whom migrated to MO, and is was passed on to Ruthvan W. MORROW (1854-1900), and became the property of his widow, Lillie Muse WALTON MORROW. Upon her death in 1904, it passed out of the MORROW family. John is listed as a land owner in the rent rolls of Berkeley Co., VA, 1774-1781, for 157 acres. John MCCORMICK had a poll  of 1, 6 slaves, Berkeley Co., VA,on the tax list of 1782-1787. He was graduated in medicine of the University of Dublin, and brought with him to this country a large and valuable medical library, which was sold at his death to Dr. Cramer, then the leading physician of Charles Town. He was the most prominent physician in his neighborhood, and left a lasting impression upon the community in which he lived. A road was established from Capt. Rutherford's to John MCCORMICK, and from there to the new road to town (assuming Charles Town).  He died in 1768, leaving a wife and eight children. His estate was appraised 8 Feb 1769. His wife and son James were the executors of his estate. It would seem that he was married before coming to this country. The descendants of his eight children are scattered throughout the states, east to west. (VAB3 p301, 6 p221, VAFRB2, 4, p48, 11, WVJEB1 p50,448, 13) Children:
