Miami High's Top Ten Games since 1974.

1.March 14, 1987-Miami High-62 Lakeland Kathleen-48

Miami High dominated hometown Lakeland Kathleen to win its first state title since 1956. MHS broke open a 12-12 tie with 14 unanswered points in the first half. Jose Ramos was MVP with 24 points and Cesar Portillo contributed 20.

2.March 1, 1985-Miami High-77 Jackson-62

Jake Caldwell's Jackson Generals lost the district 15-4A championship for only the second time in 13 years. Miami High had won the district in 1978, but had defeated Northwestern to do so. This game marked the first time MHS beat Jackson in district tournament play. Even though the schools were the two best programs in Dade County from 1970-1985, Jackson had dominated the rivalry until this game. This win against Jackson would be the beginning of a still active streak of 14 consecutive district titles.

3.March 7, 1987-Miami High-61 Miami Lakes-58

This game gave MHS the section 4-4A championship and its first appearance in the state final four in over 30 years. It was also revenge for the previous year's loss to Lakes in the sectional. A jam packed Dade-North was treated to a tremendously exciting game featuring the brilliance of Chris Corchiani for HML and the inside power and presence of Cesar Portillo for MHS. A charging call on Corchiani with three seconds left preserved a 59-58 MHS lead. Sophomore Doug Edwards was fouled on the ensuing inbounds play and coolly sank two free throws to propel MHS to Lakeland.

4.1978-Miami High defeats Central in GMAC final.

5.March 4, 1989-Miami High-54 Carol City-50

Miami High gained sweet revenge against Carol City after losing to the Chiefs in the previous years sectional final. Much like the previous year's game MHS blew most of a double figure lead, but this time they were able to hold on. Gimel Martinez who had committed several key mistakes that had helped Carol City's comeback, scored a key bucket late in the game to keep Miami High ahead. Douglas Edwards then sank two free throws to clinch the victory just like he had done two years earlier against Miami Lakes. With the victory, the Stingarees advanced to Lakeland where they cruised to their second State Championship in three years.

6.March 9, 1990-Miami High-77 Orlando Boone-75

Miami High battles back from a 13 point halftime defecit to win on Trevin Joseph's fifteen foot shot of a rebound with three seconds left. MHS scored the first 13 points of the second half led by Gimel Martinez who spent most of the game in foul trouble. However, Boone restored their lead to 66-57 with about five minutes left. Miami High stormed back with pressure defense and the inspired play of Florida Gator football signee Ben Hanks. A Lonnie Johnson missed lay-up late opened the door for Boone and Chad Curnutt(?) took advantage by hitting a baseline jumper to tie the game at 75. However, Josephs's shot would propel the Stingarees into the championship game where they would win their second consecutive championship.

7.March 3, 1990-Miami High-94 Dillard-87

High school basketball does not use a shot clock and these two teams made sure that a shot clock was not necessary as Miami High won a frenetically paced game by dominating the last few minutes of the fourth quarter. Dillard presented Broward County's first legitimate challenger in many years. They took control of the game from the second quarter and did not relinquish their lead until the fourth quarter. MHS trailed by as many as 14, but great three-point shooting by Steve Edwards and particularly Trevin Joseph brought Miami High back. The Stingarees were hampered by foul trouble as star center Gimel Martinez fouled out. Not until a double pump miracle shot by Ben Hanks late in the game did MHS fans truly believe that their team would pull this game out. The victory enabled MHS to advance to Lakeland where they would capture their third state championship in four years.

(????)1996-Miami High-63 Pompano Beach Ely-49

Miami High stuns nationally ranked Ely and their star Jermaine Walker. The game is significant because it is one of the few times during Miami High's incredible run of the last decade where they have been a signficant underdog. The win propels the Stingarees to Lakeland where they beat Orlando Dr. Phillips and avenge an earlier GMAC loss to South Miami.

(????)February 25, 1995-Miami High-70 Northwestern-54

Miami High avenges the previous year's loss to Northwestern behind the stellar play of Jamico Skipper and Marshod Fairweather. Fairweather, in particular lights up Northwestern and its taller front line with several three-pointers and he finishes with 24 points. The victory would propel MHS to Lakeland where they would lose to Vince Carter's Daytona Beach Mainland team 70-67 in the semi-finals.

(????)March 11, 1993-Miami High-71 Oviedo-56

Miami High avenges the previous year's loss to Oviedo in the state championship game. The Stingarees again play poorly, falling behind by as many as 13, but they conclude the game on an 18-0 run to advance to the state chmapionship game against rival Jacksonville Beach Fletcher.

(????)March 13, 1993-Miami High-73 Jacksonville Beach Fletcher-56

The Stingarees avenge an earlier 101-80 loss to Fletcher by crushing them in the state championship game.

(????)March 16, 1991-Miami High-69 Pensacola Washington-65 ot

Miami High captures its third straight championship by surviving against a big underdog. Pensacola Washington misses a free throw with no time left that could have given them the championship. Instead the game goes to overtime and Miami High comes through with the victory despite a subpar performance by their leading scorer Steve Edwards.

(????)March 11, 1989-Miami High-79 Orlando Oakridge-46

Miami High crushes Oakridge for their second state championship in three years. The Stingarees finish the year 35-1 and second in the USA Today Top 25 High School Basketball Poll. St. Anthony's of New Jersey finishes #1 by virtue of their 68-55 victory over MHS earlier in the year.

(????)February 28, 1987-Miami High-90 Edison-66

Miami High avenges two earlier regular season losses to their district rivals. All Miami High starters score in double figures and Edison star Jean Derouliere is held scoreless as the Stingarees play arguably their best game of the year. The win gives Miami High the district championship after Edison had won the regular season title.

(????)March 12, 1987-Miami High-72 Daytona Beach Mainland-64

Miami High survives a jittery start and finish to defeat Michael Polite and his Daytona Beach Mainland team. The Stingarees are clinging to a 65-64 lead with under a minute to play when sophomore Douglas Edwards, who led all scorers with 23, finds Cesar Portillo inside for a lay-up and foul. The resulting free throw gives MHS a 68-64 lead that proves sufficient to send Miami High to their first championship appearance in over 30 years.

(????)March 6, 1986-Miami High-78 Jackson-73

Miami High defeats Jackson for the fourth time to claim the regional title. The Stingarees defeat Jackson twice during the regular season and twice during the modified playoff format. The game proves that the Stingarees' victory the previous year was not a fluke and that the balance of power in the rivalry has inexorably shifted in the favor of MHS.
