Selected Victor Herbert Videography

Although Victor Herbert stage works and operettas in general were extremely popular in the years before sound films, by the time sound came to the movies, operetta was passe. It wasn't until the astoundingly successful partnership of Jeannette Macdonald and Nelson Eddy in the '30s that filmed operettas became fashionable. However, the filmed versions of SWEETHEARTS and NAUGHTY MARIETTA bore little resemblence to the stage versions, except for the inclusion of a few songs. The perennial children's favorite BABES IN TOYLAND has been adapted more than once, the finished products resembling Herbert's work less and less culminating in the TV version of 1986 which wasn't even a musical.
