Phantoms 4, Bridgeport 1

(10/10) The Phantoms notched a convincing victory over AHL-newcomers Bridgeport tonight. Pletka, Tiley, Lefebvre, and Greig scored for the Phantoms. Neil Little got the start and the win. On a random side note, Ray Giroux was in uniform tonight for Bridgeport. He was originally drafted by the Flyers, and I watched him play college hockey at Yale University--he was one of the best damn players ever to take the ice for the Bulldogs at Ingalls.

Greig named AHL Player of the Week

(10/8) Mark Greig was named AHL Player of the Week for his work in the Phantoms 2 first games. Greig had a goal and an assist in the season opener, and a goal and three assists on Sunday.

Recent Phantoms Results

(10/8) Phantoms 3, Rochester 2: Goals from Vaclav Pletka (2) and Mark Freer
(10/7) Phantoms 7, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 1: Goals from Peters, Slaney, Chalmers, Divisek, Greig, and Pletka (2).

The Phantoms' 3-0-0 start is the best in team history.

Phantoms Season Preview

(10/6) Please read my Phantoms season preview.

Phantoms inaugurate sixth season with a win

(10/4) The team picked by many (including The Hockey News) to win the Calder Cup got that mission off on the right foot tonight. They defeated the Worcester Ice Cats by a score of 4-3 on goals by Pletka, Divisek, Greig, and Law. Law had the game winner.

Overview of Phantoms player movement

Phantoms fall in OT

(5/1) The Phantoms' up-and-down season ended tonight in OT against the Wilkes-Barre Penguins. With the loss, hockey is officially over in the City of Brotherly Love until the fall. Watch this site for news on player movement, which there's always plenty of during the summer.

Stayin' alive

(4/28) I apologize for delays in update; I was out of town last night.

The Phantoms won games 4 and 5 to stay alive in their best of seven series against the Penguins. In Game 4 on Friday night, they rode Mark Greig's hat trick to a 8-2 victory over the Penguins. Mark Freer, Mikhael Chernov, Vaclav Pletka, Bruno St. Jacques, and John Slaney also scored in the game. Goalie Neil Little made 24 saves on 26 shots.

In Game 5 at Wilkes-Barre, Michel Picard scored in overtime to help the Phantoms avoid elimination for the second straight night. Milan Kraft had scored twice in the third period to force the extra session. HIs second goal came with the Penguins goalie pulled for an extra attacker with 1:20 remaining in the period. Tomas Divisek and Mark Greig also scored for the Phantoms. Goalie Neil Little made 37 saves on 39 shots.

Game 6 is on Tuesday, May 1, at the First Union Center. Only two teams in AHL history have come back from a 3-0 deficit in a series.

Phantoms facing elimination

(4/25) The Phantoms lost meekly at home in Game 3 tonight, putting them down 3-0 in their best of seven series with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The final score was 3-0.

Phantoms down 2-0

(4/23) The Phantoms blew a 2-1 lead by allowing the Penguins to score three unanswered goals. The loss puts them in a dangerous 2 game hole. Hmm, have the Phantoms been taking a few too many notes from the big club?

Phantoms drop Game 1

(4/21) The Phantoms took a 3-2 lead into the third period of the opening game of their second round series against the Penguins but they failed to make it hold up. The Penguins scored twice in the final frame to give the Penguins a 4-3 victory and a 1-0 series lead. Jesse Boulerice, Matt Herr, and Michel Picard scored for the Phantoms. Picard's power play goal was the Phantoms first of this year's playoffs--they were 0 for 19 until that point. (Boy, and I thought the Flyers' power play needed work!)

The Phantoms and Penguins resume their series on Monday night in Wilkes-Barre.

New picture gallery added

(4/19) As you may have noticed, this hockey site has quite a few pictures, indexed only on the Flyers player profile pages. This left all the prospects, Phantoms, and not-yet-profiled Flyers out in the cold. So I've put up a new picture index page, so you can easily access all the hockey pics that I have on this site. You may have seen a lot of them already (they're often used in news items or prospect reports). Click here to view the new picture index page.

Phantoms to face Penguins

(4/19) The Phantoms will face the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Penguins in the second round of the Calder Cup Playoffs. The Penguins have home ice (83 regular season points to the Phantoms 82), so the series will start at the First Union Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre on Saturday night. The Phantoms' home games will be played at the First Union Center, home to the Flyers and the Sixers. The two teams split the season series at five games a piece, and it was a case of home ice disadvantage, as the home team went 2-8 during the series. All time, the Phantoms are 9-1 at the First Union Arena.

Phantoms finish off Amerks

(4/16) Four different Phantoms scored to lead the orange and purple into the second round of the Calder Cup playoffs. Rochester had the second best record during the regular season (104 points) and was 4-1-1 against the Phantoms. It just goes to show that the playoffs are a whole new world. After losing game 1, the Phantoms won three games straight to take the series. On Monday night, Picard, Freer, Divisek, and Greig scored. Neil Little made 19 saves. His shutout streak against the Amerks ended at 129 minutes, a new playoff record, when Rochester scored a first period goal.

The Phantoms will play the winner of the Syracuse/Wilkes-Barre series.

Phantoms take series lead

(4/14) On the strength of Neil Little's first playoff shutout since 1998, the Phantoms have a 2-1 series lead against the Rochester Americans. Little turned aside 24 shots while Dan Peters scored all that was necessary 5:25 into the second period. Mark Freer added an insurance tally with 3:13 left in regulation. The Phantoms can clinch a first-round series victory on Monday at home.

Phantoms tie the series with Game 2 win

(4/13) Tomas Divisek scored in overtime to lift the orange and purple into a 2-1 Game 2 victory over Rochester. Divisek shot top shelf off a pass from Michel Picard in the extra period to beat goaltender Mika Noronen. Rochester opened the scoring early in the first, but the Phantoms evened the score off Brad Tiley's tally in the second. Neil Little finished with 35 saves for the evening. This marks the first time the Phantoms have played back-to-back overtime games to start a playoff series.

Phantoms drop Game 1 to Amerks

(4/11) Just as the Flyers lost a one goal game to the Sabres, so did the Phantoms lose a one goal game to the Sabres' AHL afifiliate, Rochester. The Phantoms lost in overtime, as they failed to solve Mika Noronen, the Amerk's star goaltender. Mark Greig, Kirby Law, and Joe DiPenta scored for the Phantoms, who blew a 2 goal lead.

Phantoms tie Bears

(4/7) The Phantoms allowed a late powerplay goal as they tied the Bears 2-2 at Hershey Park Arena. Steve Washburn had a goal and an assist for the Phantoms; Michel Picard had the other Phantoms goal. The Phantoms are now winless in their last 7 games.

Phantoms Award Winners

(4/6) The Phantoms handed out their team honors for the 2000-2001 season on Friday night before their game with the Hershey Bears:

Mark Greig and John Slaney have been recognized by the AHL as First Team All-Stars. Slaney, acquired from Wilkes-Barre at midseason, also won the Eddie Shore Award as the league's top defenseman.

Recent game scores

(4/6) Yeah, so I'm in the crunch of the last semester of my senior year of college. Give me a break. Here are the scores for the latest Phantoms' games.

Player transactions

Recent game scores

(3/21) Sorry, lots of homework to do these days. Here are scores for the Phantoms' most recent games.

Kirby Law has a nine-game point scoring streak. Chris Heron has been loaned to Trenton. Matt Herr was acquired from the Washington Capitals for Dean Melanson at the trade deadline (NHL). Several Phantoms remain called up to the Flyers.

Flyers call up Plante

(3/8) The Flyers called up forward Derek Plante from their AHL affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms, to replace the injured Daymond Langkow. Plante signed with the Flyers as a free agent this summer and had a disappointing training camp, which resulted in his AHL stint. There are now 10 players on the Flyers who have played at least one game for the Phantoms in the past 16 months (Brian Boucher, Peter White, Andy Delmore, Roman Cechmanek, P. J. Stock, Todd Fedoruk, Ruslan Fedotenko, Kirby Law, Michel Picard, and Plante). Plante has 51 points in 55 games with the Phantoms this year.

Little named AHL Player of the Week

(3/5) Goaltender Neil Little was named the AHL player of the week for his sensational three game stint on the road. Little went 3-0, recording back-to-back shutouts and establishing a new team record for shutout minutes (207:25). Little is the second Phantoms to win the award this year.

Phantoms beat St. John in OT

(3/4) Vaclav Pletka scored in overtime to lead the Phantoms over St. John's. Neil Little turned in another spectacular effort, extending his shutout streak to 207:25, a new team record, before allowing a goal in the third period. Derek Plante and Kirby Law also scored for the Phantoms. The Phantoms now have a four game winning streak. Their next game is on Friday against Kentucky. [View Box Score

Little extends shutout streak

(3/2) Neil LIttle extended his shutout streak to an impressive 164:27 with his second consecutive win against the Quebec Citadelles. He made 36 saves during the evening, including several in an intense first period. Kirby Law, John Slaney, and Matt Zultek scored for the Phantoms. Slaney and Zultek's goals were the first in the Phantoms uniform; Zultek's goal was also his first professional goal. [View Box Score]

Phantoms shut out Quebec

(2/27) Jesse Boulerice and Kirby Law scored to lead the Phantoms over the Quebec Citadelles. Neil Little stopped an impressive 37 shots to get his first shutout since November 1999. The Phantoms move over .500 for the season on a night when no less than 9 former Phantoms (Brian Boucher, Andy Delmore, Peter White, Ruslan Fedetenko, Todd Fedoruk, Roman Cechmanek, Mark Greig, and Steve Washburn) suited up for the big club. Ironically, the Flyers lost to Montreal team featuring former Phantoms Craig Darby and Francois Belanger.

More player movement

(2/26) The Flyers have called up Steve Washburn and returned Tomas Divisek to the Phantoms. Divisek looked a bit out of place in his first, brief NHL stint.

Recent player movement: 2 to Flyers, 2 to Phantoms

(2/25) With recent injuries to Flyers wingers Simon Gagné and Justin Williams, the Flyers have called for reinforcements for the Phantoms. Mark Greig (the Phantoms' leading scorer) and Tomas Divisek (the recent AHL player of the week) both played with the Flyers on Sunday night against the Rangers. In turn, the Phantoms have called up Trenton Titans' (ECHL) captain, Cail MacLean. The Flyers have also recently assigned hulking winger Matt Zultek, whose rights were recently acquired from Boston, to the Phantoms. Zultek, a former first-round draft pick of the L.A. Kings, is a hulking winger (6'4, 222 lbs) who spent the past four seasons witht he Ottawa 67s where he scored a Memorial Cup winning goal.

Phantoms beat Hershey

(2/24) The Phantoms improved their record against their archrivals, the Hershey Bears, to 6-3 this season with a 6-4 win at Hershey. The Phantoms scored 4 unanswered goals after falling into a 2 goal deficit. The Phantoms' goals were scored by Mark Freer, Kirby Law, Steve Washburn (2), Michel Picard, and Joe DiPenta. Matt Zultek earned an assist in his first game as a Phantom.

Phantoms shut out by Penguins

(2/23) The Phantoms were shut out by the Wilkes-Barre Penguins last night by a score of 0-2. The loss snapped their four game home unbeaten streak. Neil Little took the loss, allowing 2 goals on 25 shots.

Phantoms fall to Norfolk, 1-3

(2/21) There goes that winning streak. Phantoms lose to Norfolk tonight. Neil Little takes the loss, while Kirby Law scores the lone Phantom tally. The Phantoms go back to work on Friday Night at the Spectrum against the Wilkes-Barre Penguins.

Divisek named AHL player of the week

(2/19) Phantoms forward Tomas Divisek was named the AHL player of the week for scoring 2 goals and 7 assists for 9 points in 4 games. The Phantoms are currently riding a five game unbeaten streak. On Friday against Quebec, Divisek had four points in one period, tying a Phantoms record. This is the first honor of this type of Divisek's 2 year old AHL career and first player of the week honor for a Phantom this season.

Phantoms go 2-0-1 over the weekend

(2/18) The Phantoms are on the third night of a stretch of three games in three nights. They beat Quebec 8-5 on Friday. The goal scorers were Chris Heron (2), Vaclav Pletka (2), Tomas Divisek, Kirby Law, Michael Picard, and Derek Plante. Neil Little got the win. On Saturday night, the Phantoms tied the Syracuse Crunch 4-4. They blew a two goal lead in the process. The goal scorers were Pletka, Picard, Mark Greig, and Hero. Tonight, the Phantoms beat Quebec for the second time in three nights. Mark Greig scored just under a minute into overtime to lead the Phantoms over the Citadelles by a score of 4-3. Mikhail Chernov scored with 28 seconds remaining in regulation to force the extra session. The other two Phantoms goals were scored by Tomas Divisek and Joe DiPenta. Brian Regan got the win.

Phantoms beat Penguins

(2/13) The Phantoms beat their rivals, the Wilkes-Barre Penguins, 5-3 in an away game Tuesday night. Mark Grieg had two goals, giving the Phantoms an early lead. The Penguins pulled to within two goals in the third. Neil Little was ejected for fighting late in the third period, and Brian Regan came on in relief, giving up a goal with 8 seconds remaining. Fortunately, that didn't matter too much. The other Phantoms' goals were scored by Steve Washburn, Vaclav Pletka, and Derek Plante. [View Box Score]
