Homeplace

"This is James Jackson Luman's farm house near McKendree Cemetery, which is near Subiaco, Arkansas, and east of Paris, Arkansas. (According to Michael Gibson, the cemetery was named after a preacher who used to preach there.) I took this picture in 1983, when I met James Jackson Luman's granddaughter Louise Butler and her husband Buford in the graveyard. Louise told me that this was James Jackson Luman's home. Both Louise and Buford are now deceased. Louise's grandmother was Eliza Jane Luman Stephens. I don't know who presently owns it."

"I can remember eating dinner at the James Jackson Luman Homeplace.  William Martin Luman, son of Cyrus Luman used to live there and one Sunday after decoration at McKendree Cemetery we all went to his house for lunch.  I guess there must have been maybe 20 of us.  William Martin Luman married Mary Ezell.  When I saw the picture I immediately recognized it and remembered visiting there a few times.  It is not far from the cemetery.  I will take some pictures of a few things when we go this year and send them to you.  I have a new digital camera and this is an excellent way to start using it. "

Notes for JESSIE LEE LUMAN:
In May of 1999, Christine McSwain Mahan b.7/26/1928, shared this interesting story: Once when my grandsons Zach & Will went to the Nursing Home to visit Ma (Christine McSwain's mother) and Uncle Jess he told this story.  When the Lumans and Olivers come to Texas from Arkansas they traveled by wagons.  The boys would set on the back of the wagon and when they would pass a farm house, they would tie a string to an ear of corn and drag it behind the wagon.  The chickens would follow and peck at the corn, when they got out of sight, the boys would jump off and catch a chicken.  That night when they camped they would have chicken for supper.  Leonard Anderson said that he could never understand why the Lumans and Olivers ever left Arkansas, until he found out, about the same time that they left, there was a Judge there that was know as "The Hanging Judge".

Lillie Belle was a small woman, but she had large babies.  Like his siblings, this baby weighed about 15 pounds. Soon after he was born, he started crying and wouldn't stop.  The doctor stayed with him but was unable to do anything for him.  He cried all night, and when he stopped crying, he was dead. The baby was not named, but Papa Jernigan erected a nice marker for his grave.

[12-7-1999] from Jimmy Allen Hicks; Uncle John is right, he (Jaret) loved his whiskey.  He would get a bottle and hide it from Mit, that is what we called our grandmother, in the chicken house.  She would find it sooner or later and then go up one side of Jaret and back down the other side.  He would just find another hiding place.

Notes for JOHN WILLIAM "SAMBO" LUMAN:
John says his daddy could kill a 5th of whiskey quicker than anybody he ever saw.  Uncle Jaret was everyone's favorite uncle.  He was jolly and full of mischief.  He gave many of the nieces and nephews their nicknames, including "Aunt Monkey".  One time, he sent John to the barbershop to deliver some whiskey.  John stuck it down the waist of his pants, and just as he got in sight of the barber shop, the bottle slipped down the leg of his breeches and fell out on the ground and broke.  John says he just kept walking like nothing had happened and went on back home and told his daddy.  Asked if he got a flogging, he said his daddy said, "It's happened to me before."
