MAPLES January 16, 1889 in Johnson, Arkansas. She was born October 21, 1866 in Arkansas, and died Aft. 1910 in Oklahoma.

(From a letter written by Jessie Luman Sullivan in the early 1980's and handed down by Mamie Ruth Blankenship Fountain); At the age of 16, James H. Luman swam the Cumberland River in McMinnville, Tennessee, crossed Confederate lines, and joined the Union Army to fight in the Civil War. Word of his allegiance to the Union got back to McMinnville, and the family there was threatened so much that some of them went to Texas, but his father, William Alfred Luman, went to Arkansas. The fact that William Alfred's son had fought for the Union followed him to Arkansas, where he was killed and his wife died soon after. James H. Luman came home from the war at the age of 20, gathered up his brother and three sisters who were living with various relatives, and made a home for them until each married and had a home of their own. He became a lawyer, and was elected County Judge for Logan County, Arkansas, serving during the years 1878 - 1880.

In 1999, Emma "Jean" Harrell Luman shared the following information; George Madison Luman was a mail carrier. He drove a one-horse wagon on his mail route. Jean says that when it was raining and cold, Mr. Luman would let her ride on the spring seat beside him and he would drop her off at school. Her cousins, all boys, who walked to school, were denied the privilege of a ride, because Mr. Luman said his horse couldn't pull all of them. Mr. Luman "felt sorry for her because she was a little girl." Supposedly unbeknownst to Mr. Luman, the boys would catch a hold of the back and ride anyway, out of sight of Mr. Luman because of the tarp which covered the mail loaded on the wagon.

At the October 2, 1999, Luman family reunion, held in Panola County, Texas, Charlie Luman shared the following information; he would sometimes ride with his grandpa George Madison from the Chireno post office to the Attoyac (Blackjack) post office. The horse was a Clydesdale and his name was Bob.

There is a small marker lying in the ground at the foot of Mrs. Luman's grave which bears the inscription "N.M.L." The companion footmarker for Mr. Luman is not visible, and may have become covered with dirt over time.

Birthplace of Robert Carlos "Bud" Luman Charlie Luman remembers the large umbrella chinaberry trees on this place. He says the barn standing out back was much larger years ago. George and Nancy sold this place, located between Black Jack and Chireno on #95, and bought the land off #21 which eventually became known as The Luman Farm. A railroad came across the Luman Farm, then was later abandoned. The railroad company sent in a team to take the track up. The steel and timbers were left piled on George's property. He contacted the company to remind them of the materials left on his place, but was told that they would not be coming back to get them. Years later came World War II and a demand for steel, and George, always a shrewd businessman, made a hefty sum by selling the materials.

October 9, 1999, according to Jessie Mae Anderson Ray who was present when Matt died. The family was gathered together butchering hogs. Matt went to the well to get water, when he turned his back to the well, and suddenly slinkered down, sliding down the well curbing. He said he was hurting real bad. He died later that same day.

Three weeks after her husband Matt died, Chloe grieved herself to death. She is not buried next to Matt because there was not a space there. Matt died suddenly and they buried him without thinking of saving a space for Chloe.

Bud Luman         Bud remained without the Lord for some time after his wife Zona was converted at a revival in nearby Etoile. Although Zona encouraged her husband to "come see the show"
at the Pentecostal revival, Bud refused to go and disapproved of Zona going. She enthusiastically told him that was what she had been looking for, that her daddy had told them about that kind of church and had read about it from the Bible.
        Bud was, by all accounts, a rough and boisterous man in his younger days. One time he rode up to a baptismal service at the river and broke up the crowd. Some time afterward, Bud told his young sons Vernon and Charlie to help O.B. (his nephew who lived with them) feed the livestock. The three boys were to join Bud after they got through with the evening chores.
        However, Bud did not wet his hook that day. As he walked across a log, he began to experience severe chest pain, and was in such a state that he barely made it back to the house. They called the operator at Chireno to try to get a doctor out to him, but the doctors were all on other calls delivering babies. Bud told Zona that he was going to die, and asked her to pray for him. Zona prayed for him. She also assured him that he was going to live.
        Bud made a vow to live for Jesus, and he got better through the night. The next morning at breakfast, he told his children, "From this day on, we're going to give God thanks for our bread and butter." Bud was baptized by Bro. Wesley Mott in Ten Mile Creek which flowed beside the Etoile Pentecostal Church.
        About six months later, Zona had gone to help a neighbor who had delivered twins, Lester and Mary Pinkston. Charlie, who slept with his daddy until he was big, remembers his daddy lying there in bed that night praying. Every time Charlie dozed off and woke back up, he heard his daddy praying. In the morning, Zona came in and he said, "You'll never believe what happened while you were gone."
        "You got the Holy Ghost!" she said. He told her that indeed he had.
        Bud quit making and selling brew and fighting and carousing. He began to preach. His parents were upset at Bud's spiritual conversion and decision to preach. They would have rather him been an alcoholic than for him to have been a Pentecostal. He also had some opposition to his ministry outside his family. On one occasion, he was rotten-egged while preaching at Mt. Herman. But Bud's ministry flourished in spite of these obstacles, and as he and Zona preached side by side, hundreds came to know the Lord and be converted. He believed in "oneness or hell" and clung to Acts 2:38. As he went about his work, he often sang the following hymn:       "Glory, glory hallelujah
When I lay my burden down,
I'm going home to be with Jesus
When I lay my burden down."

    Bob Luman had a gigantic hit song 18 years ago that stands today as a well-spoken eulogy for his life.
    It was called Let's Think About Living (Let's Think About Loving).
    Luman lived the life he suggested in songs, his friends say, even up to his death at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Thomas Hospital.
    He was a highly energetic man. When he walked into a room, you knew he was there.
    His biggest love in life was his family and close circle of friends. They all knew him well and were aware of his one desire in life-to become a big country music star.
     He wanted to be the biggest name in the business, and more than once he talked about his career, how he looked high and low for hit songs and how when he found them, Uncle Sam had a strange knack for finding him, too.
      Luman, 41, one of the stars of the Grand Ole Opry, died following a long bout with pneumonia.
       "This is a very sad day for me," said Ralph Emery, WSM radio and TV personality and longtime friend of the singer.
       "Bob and I spent a lot of time together over the years, especially when both of us were single.
        "Many times Bob reminded me of the two times he got big hit songs and after they hit, he would be called into the service.
         "Once he was drafted, and the next time he was re-activated.
         "It happened in 1960 with Let's Think About Living and then again in 1965 with The Great Snowman," Emory said.
         "Bob was a fantastic talent. He bounced and bubbled on the stage. He gave of himself and enjoyed entertaining. He never held back."
           Luman's last appearance on the Opry was Dec. 15, three days before he was admitted to the hospital suffering from the pneumonia and complications from a ruptured esophagus he had in Texas in 1976.
           "I'll remember Bob not only as a talented entertainer but also a very compassionate family man," said E.W. "Bud" Wendell, president of WSM.
            "Last year I visited him in Las Vegas where he was appearing. After the show, he told us how homesick he was, how he wanted to get back home and be with his family and friends."
             Luman was a native of Nacogdoches, Tex. In junior high school, he got his first taste of show business by forming a small combo. Later, he became a regular on Shreveports's Louisiana Hayride radio show.
            One of his closest friends was former singer Norris Wilson, who now heads Warner Bros. records here. Luman and Wilson were roommates in the 60s.
            "Bob was a country star," Wilson said. "But he could have been much gigger if he had gotten the breaks. Every time he got started, he had to go serve his country.
             "He was one of my closest friends. He was full of living and loving.
             "I don't think he wanted to leave here."
             Funeral services for Luman are set for 3 p.m. Friday at Alexander Funeral Home in Gallatin with burial in Woodlawn Memorial Park East in Hendersonville.
             The Rev. Bob Harrington, known as "The Chaplain of Bourbon Street," will officiate.
             In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Sumner Academy Gymnasium Fund in Gallatin.
             Luman is survived by his wife, Barbara Luman, Hendersonville; a daughter, Melissa Luman, Hendersonville; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Luman, of Nacogdoches, Tex; and a sister, Mrs. Pat Everitt, of Elyria, Ohio.

COUNTY OF NACOGDOCHES Know all men by these Presents, that we,
Geo. M. Luman and wife N. M. Luman of the County of Nacogdoches State of Texas
for and in consideration of the sum of One Thousand ($1000.00) Dollars paid and secured
to be paid by J. M. Marshall $425.00 in cash and one promissory note of even date
herewith executed by said J. M. Marshall in favor of Geo. M. Luman or order for the sum
of $575.00 and is due in five annual payments as follows: $175.00 due Dec. 10, 1909,
$100.00 due Dec. 10, 1910, $100.00 due Dec. 10, 1911, $100.00 due Dec. 10 1912, and
$100.00 due Dec. 10, 1913, with ten percent interest per annum, interest on all of said
payments after their maturity until paid have Granted, Sold and Conveyed, and by these
presents do Grant, Sell and Convey unto the said J. M. Marshall of the County of
Nacogdoches and State of Texas all that certain tract of land containing of Black Jack
on the Chireno road and on the Jose I. YBarbo Bros. grant of land in Nacogdoches
County, Texas, for description and field notes reference is hereby made to a deed from
Z. T. Fall to John C. Martin, and being this same land conveyed to me by the said Geo.
M. Luman by J. S. Dearing and J. O. Dearing by deed dated May 9 1887 which is
recorded in Vol. 53, on pages 82 and 83 of Nacogdoches County Records of deeds.
To Have and to Hold The above described premises, together with all and singular
the rights and appurtenances thereto in anywise belonging unto the said J. M. Marshall his
heirs and assigns, forever. And We do hereby bind ourselves our heirs executors and
administrators to his heirs and assigns, against every person whomsoever lawfully claiming
or to claim the same or any part thereof.
But it is expressly agreed and stipulated, that the Vendor’s Lien is retained against
the above described property, premises and improvements, until the above described
notes, and all interest thereon, are fully paid according to its face and tenor, effect and
reading when this Deed shall become absolute.
