Members of the university must wear the academic dress appropriate to their degree. Graduates of other universities may wear the academic dress of those universities.

Degrees in Mineral Technology and Jurisprudence are no longer awarded.

Chancellor

Robe: black pure silk damask, lined with blue silk. The collar and facings are trimmed with gold lace bands, and the University Coat of Arms and Maori symbols of steps to higher learning (Pounamu) are embroidered in coloured silk and gold on the front edges of the collar.

Cap: black pure silk grosgrain(2) trencher with a gold lace band and a gold button and tassel.

Pro-Chancellor

Robe: black pure silk, lined with silver silk. The collar and facings are trimmed with silver lace bands, and the University Coat of Arms and Maori symbols of steps to higher learning (Pounamu) are embroidered in coloured silk and gold on the front edges of the collar.

Vice-Chancellor

Robe: black with blue facings.

Cap: black cloth trencher with black tassel.

Alternatively, members of the Council may wear the academic dress proper to their degrees.

Registrar

Robe: black grosgrain, with facings and sleeve linings of purple, trimmed with silver lace bands.

Cap: black pure silk grosgrain trencher with a silver lace band and a silver button and tassel.

Doctors

Gown: as for the Cambridge Master of Arts, but is of cardinal red (BCC 186) silk, silk-like fabric or cloth.

Hood: same size and shape as the Cambridge Master of Arts, and is made wholly of coloured silk according to the appropriate faculty.

Cap: black velvet cap as worn by Doctors at Scottish Universities, or alternately, those who graduated before 1992 may wear a black cloth trencher with black tassel.

Doctors

of Philosophy

Gown: as for the Cambridge Master of Arts, but is of ruby red (BCC 38) silk, silk-like fabric or cloth.

Hood: same size and shape as the Cambridge Master of Arts, and is made wholly of ruby red (BCC 38) silk or silk-like fabric.

Cap: black velvet cap as worn by Doctors at Scottish Universities, or alternately, those who graduated before 1992 may wear a black cloth trencher with black tassel.

Masters

Gown: as for the Cambridge Master of Arts.

Hood: same size and shape as the Cambridge Master of Arts, and are black, lined with silk or silk-like fabrics of the same colour as for the corresponding faculty.

Cap: black cloth trencher with black tassel.

Bachelors

with Honours

Gown: as for the Cambridge Bachelor of Arts.

Hood: same size and shape as the Cambridge Master of Arts, and are black, lined with coloured silk or silk-like fabric according to faculty, and bordered with 1½" white grosgrain.

Cap: black cloth trencher with black tassel.

Bachelors

Gown: as for the Cambridge Bachelor of Arts.

Hood: same size and shape as the Cambridge Master of Arts, and are black, lined with coloured silk or silk-like fabric according to faculty, and bordered with 1½" white fur. The Degree of Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science is without the fur.

Cap: black cloth trencher with black tassel.

Undergraduates including Diplomates and holders of Certificates

Gown: none.

Hood: none.
