University of New Zealand(1)
The academical dress for the degrees of the University of New Zealand is still not infrequently seen, though none have been awarded since 1962. It was a federal institution, on the model of the University of London, and the older of the current universities were for long university colleges of the old body.
The regulations of the university required that graduates must appear at all public ceremonies of the University in the academic costume proper to their degree,(2) but doctors may on special occasions wear a scarlet gown(3) and graduates admitted ad eundem may wear the academic costume of their own university.(4)
Regulations were published from 1879 to 1958. From the first they followed the model of the University of Cambridge at least as to patterns, but were only consolidated in 1948, when a list of faculty colours was given for the first time.(5)
Chancellor
Robe: black silk, with scarlet velvet collar and facings embroidered with gold.(6)
Cap: black trencher with black tassel.(7)
Pro-Chancellor
Robe: black silk, with scarlet velvet collar and facings embroidered with gold less richly that for that of the Chancellor.(8)

Vice-Chancellor
Robe: black silk, with scarlet velvet collar and facings embroidered with gold less richly that for that of the Chancellor.(10)

Doctors
Gown: as for the Cambridge Master of Arts, but is made of black silk or of scarlet silk or cloth.(16) The gowns were originally (and until 1948)(17) as for the Master of Arts.(18) Doctors may on special occasions (from 1938)(19) wear a scarlet robe.
Hood: same size and shape as the Cambridge Master of Arts,(20) and is made wholly of coloured silk according to the appropriate faculty. The hoods were originally as for the Master of Arts, lined with coloured silk.(21)

Doctors
of Philosophy
Gown: as for the Cambridge Master of Arts.(23) Doctors may on special occasions wear a scarlet robe.
Hood: same size and shape as the Cambridge Master of Arts,(24) and is made wholly of scarlet silk or silk-like fabric.

Masters
Gown: as for the Cambridge Master of Arts.(26)
Hood: same size and shape as the Cambridge Master of Arts,(27) and are black, lined with silk or silk-like fabrics of the same colour as for the corresponding faculty.

Bachelors
Gown: as for the Cambridge Bachelor of Arts.(29)
Hood: same size and shape as the Cambridge Master of Arts,(30) and are black, lined with coloured silk or silk-like fabric according to faculty, and bordered with 1½" white fur.
