The merger of Wellington Polytechnic and Massey University was announced October 1998. Massey University also merged with Palmerston North College of Education.

Graduates wear the academic dress appropriate to their degree. Graduates of other universities may wear the academic dress of their own university.(2)

Graduates in a conjoint programme of two degrees may choose which of the relevant hoods they will wear.

 

Chancellor

Robe: of rich all silk University blue (BCC 90 midnight) damask, with 50 mm (2") gold oak leaf lace on outer edges of facings. Gold ornaments to sleeves and sleeve cuffs edged with gold plate lace, and facings and shoulder wings trimmed with light blue (BCC 84 forget-me-not) taffeta. The University Coat of Arms shall be borne on each shoulder.

Cap: rich all silk University blue (BCC 90 midnight) damask trencher, lightly decorated with gold lace, and with gold tassel.

Pro-Chancellor

Robe: of rich all silk University blue (BCC 90 midnight) damask, with 25 mm (1") gold lace on outer edges of facings and shoulder wings. Facings and shoulder wings to be of light blue (BCC 84 forget-me-not) taffeta. The University Coat of Arms shall be borne on each shoulder.

Cap: rich all silk University blue (BCC 90 midnight) damask trencher with gold tassel.

Vice-Chancellor

Robe: of rich all silk University blue (BCC 90 midnight) damask, with 25 mm (1") silver lace on outer edges of facings and shoulder wings. Facings and shoulder wings to be of light blue (BCC 84 forget-me-not) taffeta. The University Coat of Arms shall be borne on each shoulder.

Cap: rich all silk University blue (BCC 90 midnight) damask trencher lightly decorated with silver lace, and with silver tassel.

Principal, now Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Campus Head

Robe: of rich all silk University blue (BCC 90 midnight) damask, with 25 mm (1") silver lace on outer edges of facings and shoulder wings. Facings and shoulder wings to be of light blue (BCC 84 forget-me-not) taffeta, with the University Coat of Arms on each shoulder.

Cap: rich all silk University blue (BCC 90 midnight) damask trencher lightly decorated with silver lace, and with silver tassel.

Registrar, and Regional Registrar

Robe: of plain all silk University blue ottoman without ornamentation, but facings and shoulder wings to be of light blue (BCC 84 forget-me-not) taffeta. The University Coat of Arms shall be borne on each shoulder.

Cap: plain all silk University blue (BCC 90 midnight) ottoman trencher with light blue (BCC 84 forget-me-not) tassel.

Other members of the Council

Robe: as for the Cambridge Bachelor of Arts, faced with 50 mm light blue (BCC 84 forget-me-not) satin edged with 25 mm dark blue (BCC 90 midnight) satin.

Hood: Members of the Council may wear the hood proper to their degrees.

Cap: Members of the Council may wear the cap proper to their degrees.

University Marshal, University Orator, Graduation Officials

Robe: Own academical dress, with the addition of the University Coat of Arms on each shoulder.

Cap: appropriate to own degree.

Hood: appropriate to own degree.

Doctors

Robe: as for the Cambridge Master of Arts, but of "post office red" (BCC 209).

Undress Gown: a Master’s robe embellished with a scarlet rosette on the left lapel and a triangular area of scrollwork of braid on each shoulder.

Hood: as for the Master’s hood appropriate to the Faculty in which the degree was taken.

Cap: black velvet bonnet as for the Oxford Doctor of Civil Law.

Undress gown: a Master’s robe embellished with a scarlet rosette on the left lapel.

Gown: as for the Cambridge Master of Arts.

Hood: same size and shape as the Cambridge Master of Arts, of University blue (BCC 90 midnight) and lined with the colour of the appropriate degree except for the MPhil which shall be lined with the colour "post office red" (BCC 209).

Cap: black cloth trencher with black tassel.
