University of the South Pacific(1)
The University of the South Pacific covers the Cook Islands, Niue, and Tokelau, all dependencies of New Zealand.
The design is of lightweight material appropriate for tropical countries, and of a colour which reflects the brown tapa or masi found widely throughout the region. Blue represents the sea and sky.
Degrees include DU, PhD, MA, MAgr, MSc, BA, BEd, BAgr, BSc, LLB. PGCE, certificates and diplomas. MBBS is awarded as an external degree at the Fiji School of Medicine. Honorary degrees have a light blue colouring. Browns are the colours of the tapa cloth patterns.
Chancellor
Robe: brown Indian silk, with long sleeves lined with cream silk. Facings 6" of specially designed tapa carrying a motif representing all the region. Gathered not pleated at yoke.
Cap: brown Indian silk trencher with braided lower edge, and a brown tassel.
Pro-Chancellor
Robe: as for the Chancellor, but sleeves unlined.
Cap: as for the Chancellor, but without the braid.
Vice-Chancellor
Robe: as for the Pro-Chancellor, but with 4" tapa facings.
Cap: as for the Pro-Chancellor.
Registrar
Robe: as for the Pro-Chancellor without tapa facings.
Cap: as Pro-Chancellor.
Doctors
Gown: dark blue Indian silk with pleats on each side at the back, with the sleeves having a horizontal lower edge and a slit at the front. Facings are of light blue Indian silk (the degree colour), as are the sleeve linings.
Hood: simple cowl twice size of the bachelor's hood, lined light blue.
Cap: dark blue Indian silk trencher with light blue tassel.
Doctors
of Philosophy
Gown: As for Doctors, but are unlined, and facings are of red Indian silk (the degree colour).
Hood: As for Doctors, but lined red.
Cap: dark blue Indian silk trencher with red tassel.
Masters
Gown: of dark brown tetron cotton in a simple design. There are three pleats on each side at the back. Sleeves come to knee level.
Hood: a simple cowl of dark brown with a light blue (the degree colour) lining for the hood. The front is finished in a 2" wide neckband which is light blue and lined in the degree colour. At the rear the hood is lined with the degree colour.
Cap: lightweight dark brown fabric trencher with tassel. Wear is optional.
Masters
of Philosophy
Gown: dark brown.
Hood: plain dark brown.
Cap: lightweight dark brown fabric trencher with tassel. Wear is optional.
Bachelors
Gown: same design as master's gown, but in a lighter shade of tapa brown.
Hood: lined with discipline colour, as master's. The front is finished in a 2" wide neckband which is of plain brown.
Cap: lightweight light brown fabric trencher with tassel. Wear is optional.
Postgraduate Diplomats
Gown: dark brown, of the same colour and design as for the corresponding master's gown.
Hood: none.
Cap: none.
Diplomats and Certificate holders
Gown: light brown, of the same design as the corresponding bachelor's gown.
Hood: none.
Cap: none.
Undergraduates
Gown: none.
Hood: none.
