Mission College Security Patch 1990

Mission College Security Patch 1990
The CSO program was very successful during the 1980’s with many Administration of Justice students participating in the program. However, Mission College administrators were concerned they were not receiving the same type of service. The Administration of Justice (AJ) program was at West Valley College, and students lived in the surrounding area close to the college. With Mission College 11 miles away from West Valley College there were not a lot of CSO’s who wanted to drive their personal vehicles all the way out there to work a 4 hour shift.

The thinking of the Mission College Administration at that time was, because the CSO’s were West Valley College students, the CSO’s had no loyalty to Mission College. So, in 1990 the Mission College Administration along with the Director of Facilities (Who oversaw the police department at that time), decided to start a Mission College Security Officer program which the Police Department was assigned to oversee. The idea was to recruit Mission College students whom the Mission College Administration believed would have a vested interest in keeping their college safe.

A new patch was designed for the new program. The basic patch design was the same design used by crossing guards in the City of San Jose. It also has the familiar look to the first two CSO patches. Using the crossing guard patch design, the words “Security Officer” were put on the top arch of the patch, and “Mission College” was put on the bottom. Along with the new patches, the Mission Security Officers got new badges that ‘read Security Officer.” The uniforms for the security officers were the same as the CSO uniform, a white shirt with dark blue pants, and dark shoes.

The new program was heavily advertised at Mission College with only one student applying for the position. This one student was hired, trained, and worked at Mission College. However, she was the only Mission College student to work in that position. Despite the efforts for the Mission College Administration to try to recruit Mission College students, there was just no interest. After less than a year, the program was cancelled; and the Mission College Security Officer transferred into the CSO program.
