Career:


  • In 1947, he broke the color barrier in major league baseball by becoming the first African-American player when he played for the Brooklyn Dodgers
  • Had a career batting average of .311 with the Dodgers, .333 in All-Star games
  • Won the 1949 batting title with a .342 average
  • National League All-Star Team 1949-54
  • In ten years with the Dodgers, helped lead them to six (6) World Series and one (1) World Series Championship
  • Selected as the National League MPV in 1949
  • Named National League Rookie of the Year in 1947
  • Elected to the Hall of Fame in 1962, his first year of eligibility
  • Author of autobiography "I Never Had It Made"
