Franklin Bonilla, 17, and his friend Jonathan Lazo, 15, who was killed - were driving around Brentwood looking for Renault Car Dealer In Glover Vermont Lazo's cousin on their way to McDonald's early Friday, Bonilla said yesterday by phone from Southside Hospital. "I think what happened was Jonathan led me to the wrong house," Bonilla said. Lazo, an incoming freshman at Brentwood High School, was peering into the dark windows of a house when a man ran out, Bonilla said. Bonilla said Lazo got scared and ran back to their 1996 Honda, and they drove away. "Then, out of nowhere, the van came," said Bonilla, an incoming sophomore at Central Islip High School. Police said LaPaul Phelps, 32, of 449 Grand Blvd., rear-ended Bonilla's car on Broadway around 2:55 a.m. Bonilla crashed into a telephone pole and was taken to Southside with a broken back and a broken right arm. Lazo was airlifted to Stony Brook Medical Center, where he died within hours, police said. Suffolk cops are still investigating the circumstances of the crash, but they believe Phelps and the teens had gotten into an argument after Phelps saw the teens' car pull up to his house and at Car Cruises In Ontario least one of them step onto his property. "We don't know what they were doing there, but as far as we can tell, they had no legitimate reason to be there," Third Squad Det. Sgt. William Rand said. As Phelps yelled, the teens drove away. Phelps followed. At his arraignment yesterday at First District Court in Central Islip, Phelps pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges of driving while intoxicated, officials said. He was ordered jailed on $250,000 bail. He is scheduled to return to court Tuesday. Bonilla said Lazo was like family to him. "I'm angry that my friend died. I know the cops are dealing with that stuff, and I feel comfortable about that," he said. "But my friend is not with me anymore." Staff writer Matthew Chayes contributed to this story.
