*  Frequently Asked Questions

*  Is ANCO part of the Ecuadoran government?

ANCO is a private non-profit organization established by a ministerial accord.  It maintains contracts with the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry with the end of administrating the haciendas Concepción de Monjas and El Tablón.

* When is ANCO’s main office open?

The office of ANCO is located in the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry.  It is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

* I need to buy some breeding ewes.  Can ANCO help me?

ANCO does not sell its ewe stock.  ANCO ewes are retained by the haciendas to replace old ewes and increase the flock size.  Only if conditions permit are ewe lambs sold, but even then in very small quantities, as well as the culled ewes that intended for slaughter.  We must note that because of the cost and difficulty of maintaining purebred animals, ANCO highly recommends that sheep projects draw upon the already existing criolla and mestiza population for ewe stock.

* Is there a discount on the rams if I buy in quantity?

No.  The price is already subsidized, whether one, twenty, or more are bought.

* Can ANCO help me transport my new animals?

No.  ANCO does not have the facilities, resources, or vehicles to do so.

* Where are the two haciendas located?

The hacienda Concepción de Monjas, which runs the Corriedale and Poll Dorset flocks, is located in the parroquia of Lloa and province of Pichincha, a half-hour drive southeast of Quito.  The hacienda El Tablón, which runs the Rambouillet flock, is located in the parroquia of Pifo and province of Pichincha, an hour and a half drive east of Quito.

* Is there a foundation that can help my community start a sheep project?

Many foundations, NGOs, and other organizations have worked with ANCO to assist in starting sheep projects in rural communities.  Some of those entities include: Heifer Project, World Vision, Plan Internacional, CARE, PL-480, GTZ, Fondo Canadiense, and the Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo, among others.

* How can we get an ANCO extensionist to come to our community to give a talk on sheep care?

Call the ANCO office, 02-2552-546, to arrange visits.

* Can I have someone come to my property to view my sheep project and give me advice?

Yes.  Simply call the ANCO office at the number above.

* We want to arrange a school trip to visit an ANCO hacienda and learn about sheep.  Is that possible?

Certainly.  Before approving the visit, ANCO must receive an official letter fifteen days in advance that specifies the anticipated date, the reason for the visit, the number of participants, and the person in charge.

*  How You Can Help

To improve the sheep industry in the country, the assistance that ANCO receives is very little.  In view of the importance of sheep production to the country and its potential for raising rural communities from poverty, the assistance that ANCO receives advances the country’s development.

The purchase of rams is the biggest factor in the survival of ANCO and in the dispersion of superior genetics to the ovine population.  ANCO appreciates the help of organizations that buy improved rams to donate to rural communities.

As a professional organization, ANCO is dedicated to the improvement of the quality of its technology, knowledge, and human resources.  It receives with pleasure the suggestions of other professionals in the sheep industry.  Technical exchanges, literature, and research that treat of the sheep industry are well received.

ANCO, as a non-profit organization, depends on its income from the two haciendas to be able to provide services such as extension and the ram lamb subsidy.  To augment and amplify its areas of service, infrastructure, and the technologies that it offers, additional financial support is needed.  ANCO is always happy to receive help in the form of financial resources.
