PROBLEMS

JUMPING ON PEOPLE
Our best friend jumps on us, not because he wants to do something wrong, but because he's happy to see us! But let's face it, this behavior is not always appreciated. The best way of stopping this is to have your dog learn the "sit, stay" command. When you enter the room simply give him a "sit, stay" and you go to greet him with loving pats. Have someone else hold him on a leash during a "sit, stay" and then enter the room and approach him. Continue to practice this with other people and yourself. If by chance your dog does jump on you, the trick is to catch him "before" the jump. Anticipate his move and the second he looks like he's getting ready to jump, turn away or step back.A very good exercise to work on is you have your dog next to you on a leash. Have a friend come towards you. IF the dog gets up from the sit, don't say anything, simply have your friend back away. Once the dog sits, the friend approaches again. As long as the dog remains in a sit position, the friend will approach and pet your dog. You see the dog WANTS the person to come to him and he will figure it out...if he stays sitting, he gets what he wants...if he gets up...the thing he wants moves away.
One of the biggest mistakes people make is to enter their home and immediately say hi to the dog/dogs and get them wound up with "awwww did you miss me" or "poor baby, I'm sorry I wasn't here"...well you get the picture :) This is NOT necessary!!!! The dog will not hate you for coming in, putting your things down, and having them WAIT until you are ready to greet them.

CHEWING
You can't correct a dog for a behavior unless you SEE him doing the wrong thing. If your dog is a chewer then by all means do not leave him unattented. Keep your eye on him, keep him with you when you are in the house and if you can't be, then crate him. If you SEE your dog going to chew on something he is not allowed, then have one of his toys ready and go to him. This will take time and patience on your part and you will be re directing the pups attention a lot. There are many fine toys on the market to satisfy a dogs chewing urge, stock up for a variety!

BARKING
When I say "barking" I am referring to a nuisance barker, barking for no reason other than to bark. He may want to be with you and he can't, or he may see another dog in the neighbors yard, or whatever. Sometimes you are close to your dog to give a correction and sometimes he's out of reach. The best thing to do in a barking situation is to re direct the dog. Have him SIT or DOWN, or COME to you. And when he does...PRAISE him a lot, give him treats, make this the most wonderful thing he has done!
You can also teach your dog to SPEAK on command followed with teaching him to be QUIET on command so when he is barking, you can give the QUIET command.

GETTING FOOD OFF COUNTER
The good old "OFF" command comes in handy here. Remember the "OFF" command and the "DOWN" command are not the same so choose your commands wisely. Your dog by this time knows the "DOWN" command. If you see him up on your counter, or table give him the "Doggie Off" command then physically get him off then praise. This command works with dogs jumping on furniture also. I have found using the "Doggie Off" in conjunction with moving my arm in the direction I want him to go, works wonders. Getting them to stay off furniture is a battle especially if you have allowed them to get up there and all of a sudden decide no more! But be consistant and you should see results.

Things to remember:
...Timing is everything. Command first, make him do it, praise, all within a few seconds.
...Be patient and consistant and please no hitting!
