Ph.D., Nuclear Physics, Atomic and Nuclear Department, Faculty of Physics – University of Bucharest, Romania, Magna Cum Laude, 2001
    Advisor: Dr. Calin Besliu
Thesis Title: Contributions to the Study of the Materials Structure by Gamma-Ray Computerized Tomography Method
Abstract: The author developed a new dual-energy CT method and applied it for structural investigations in geology, paleontology, and archaeology. This method accurately characterizes the materials interior structure by mapping local density and effective atomic number by using gamma radiation from 192-Ir radioisotope. Structural parameters of sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, polymetallic nodule, corals, fossils, and marine cores, such as: degree of mineralization, total or partial porosity, volumetric and mass concentration of fractions of material, bulk/local density and effective atomic number, and stratigraphy frequency have been determined and analyzed. By scanning archaeological artifacts, the author detected a counterfeit work of art, identified restoration and preservation procedures for the oldest cannon in Romania presenting signs of severe deterioration, and determined the work of arts internal structure for evaluation purposes. An original gamma collimator for micro-tomography and its applications and results are also presented.

Master of Science, Physics / Nuclear Engineering, Faculty of Physics – University of Bucharest, Romania, GPA: 3.6/4.0, 1990
